French photographer Patrick Desgraupes turns the hidden drama of winemaking into something cosmic, capturing fermentation through light, movement and abstraction.

Look closely at one Patrick Desgraupes’photographs and you might see a distant planet, the iris of an eye or a galaxy suspended in a space. In reality you are looking into a vat of fermenting wine.The French fine-art photographer has spent years capturing one of the winemaking’s most important transformations at extraordinary close quarters, working during the vendanges at some of France’s most celebrated estates, including Dom Pérignon, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Château Margaux, Château d’Yquem, Domaine Guigal, Clos des Lambrays and Champagne Jacques Selosse. What began with Cosmogony of Wine series developped into From Grape to Stars, an ongoing exploration of fermentation, light and transformation in which the contents of wine vat become something altogether more celestial.
For Desgraupes this is not simply a record of how wine is made. His photographs are deliberately somewhere between science, still life and abstraction : a way of revealing the movement, colour and energy hidden in the darkness of the cellar. It is an approach rooted in his long fascination with light. Before turning his lens towards wine, Desgraupes was already knowed for large format landscape photography publishing five books and exhibiting extensively in France and internationnaly.

Famille Audibert gave artist-photographer Patrick DESGRAUPES free rein to express his vision of our estate. Continuing his work at Château de Calavon during harvest 2025, he turned his lens toward our vats. Through 7 unique works, he reveals a vision of rare intensity.

“From Grape to Stars” series in Provence
The series represents vats of fermenting wine seen from above. Every year I work with the most prestigious French wine estates in the four weeks following the harvest.
It is a work on the concept of transformation, in this case that of grapes into wine, which is found everywhere in the universe. By plunging my gaze into the organic, I show how Man, who is at the heart of this transformation, reveals its cosmic dimension.
In this visual metaphor where the vats of wine strangely resemble planets made like us of nitrogen, calcium, and iron I myself transform into “Stardust” to touch, for a moment, the origin of life.
I go back in time to capture the DNA of these iconic wines in the early days of their birth.
