In 2023 I spent a lot of time on Mount Hiei during my first residency in Japan. One hot September afternoon a storm rolled in fast. The canopy was so dense it went almost completely black around me. I painted quickly, partly because I had no choice. There was also a big centipede where I was perched that I wasn’t too keen on.

These three small works came out of that afternoon. Loose and immediate in a way my work rarely is, they were painted on site in the damp with the light getting swallowed. I’ve had them hanging at home ever since and have come to really like them as objects. They feel like remnants of that unexpected arvo.

Looking back, it marked the beginning of a shift in my practice. It seeded ‘Memory of a Disappearing Pool’ and has woven its way into much of the work I’ve made since.

There’s a face in one of them. Maybe that was the storm visiting.
