I've been working this one as I study through The Acting Class course and playing with different techniques of the non-dominant approach. Fascinating stuff. Imagine the freedom we would all feel if we stopped policing one another—and ourselves.

Imagine the freedom we would feel if we no longer believed that someone else had to have less power, less dignity, or less freedom in order for us to have more.

Imagine if we understood that the qualities we call “masculine” and “feminine” are human qualities. Strength. Tenderness. Assertiveness. Vulnerability. Ambition. Nurturance. Courage. Fear. None of them belongs to any particular gender.

We created the categories. We assigned them value. And then we built rules around who is allowed to embody them.

So much of misogyny, homophobia and transphobia depends upon maintaining those rules—and punishing people who violate them.

Patriarchy doesn't just restrict women. It asks all of us to participate in a hierarchy: to know our place, perform our assigned role, and police anyone—including ourselves—who steps outside it.

Imagine how much energy we could reclaim if we simply stopped.

Making a film is incredibly hard. Getting that film out into the world and seen may be even harder.
Looking back on the festival run for Beau Ideal, I’m kind of in awe of what we were able to accomplish with this tiny, self-funded microbudget film and a crew of six.
From our World Premiere at the Sedona International Film Festival, to screenings at Beloit International Film Festival and Bare Bones; from winning Best Narrative Feature at Oneota Film Festival and Best Screenplay at Covellite International Film Festival, to an incredible night at No ID Film Festival, where we received Best Writer, Best Actor for Eric Martin Reid, and Best Feature Film; and finally, a lovely return home to the Pacific Northwest with Local Sightings Film Festival at Northwest Film Forum.
Really, all of this was beyond what I could have imagined for the first feature film I wrote.
Thank you to each and every one of these festivals for taking a chance on our little film. And thank you to everyone who came out, showed up, watched, shared posts/info, talked about it, and supported this endeavor along the way. I won’t forget it.
So, what’s next?
So much more. News soon.
In the meantime, to all my fellow creatives: get out there and do stuff. Give it your all. It’s what we’re here to do. When we leave this world, we should have nothing left that we were afraid to give.

About Last Night (Part 2)
While part of the Beau Ideal crew was in Seattle for Local Sightings, Edd Blott was across the state line in Coeur d’Alene representing the film at the NoID Film Festival.
And it turned into quite a night for Beau Ideal:

A huge thank you to Matt and everyone at the NoID Film Festival for welcoming Beau Ideal, celebrating independent filmmaking, and giving our film such an extraordinary night.

About Last Night (Part 1)
A huge thank you to Local Sightings Film Festival at Northwest Film Forum for an amazing night with Beau Ideal in Seattle.
One of the best parts was getting to reunite Beau Ideal actors Michèle Tredger, Kelly Godell, and Patrick D. Green for the screening. It was such a wonderful experience getting to share the film with an audience and then actually have the time and space to talk about it afterward.
Thank you to Rajah Makonnen for leading such a thoughtful Q&A, and to everyone in the audience who stayed, asked questions, shared their perspectives, and engaged so genuinely with the film. Those conversations are one of the things that make seeing a film with an audience so different from experiencing it anywhere else.
And a special thank you to Dylan and Brice for coming out and showing their support. It meant a lot to have you there.
Seattle, you were very good to Beau Ideal. ❤️

Ok, but read it in your best Dolly Parton voice.

Talking about sharing the positive here.

As someone with a great deal of self-doubt, I often struggle with self-promotion. In fact, praise can sometimes feel like a burden—like I've now been handed something I have to live up to endlessly.

On the other hand, as an actor and now a filmmaker, part of the job is putting your work into the world and advocating for it. And that generally means sharing the good stuff: the festival selections, the awards, the reviews, the moments when somebody connects with the work.

There's a Georgia O'Keeffe quote I love: “I have already settled it for myself so flattery and criticism go down the same drain and I am quite free.”

I'm not quite there yet.

Maybe that's the trick: learning to share the good things without needing them to prove anything. Toot the horn, enjoy the moment, and then get back to work. by @patrickdgreen

Closing night in Coeur d’Alene.

Beau Ideal screens as the Closing Night Feature of the NoID Film Festival this Saturday, September 26.

It’s especially meaningful to have the film close out the festival after the journey it’s had this year. Edd will be there for the screening and the festivities afterward, and would love to see some familiar—and new—faces in the audience.
