having spent time updating my website (patrickflannerycomposer.com, link in bio!), i wanted to share these musings on myself and what i do (and why i choose to do it) here! as any creative knows, words describing our creative pursuits rarely capture the essence of what we do, but i think these words come close to it. at least for now.

additionally, scores for all of my works are publicly accessible to download and perform on my website. in this current time, when many (myself included) are in positions where purchasing music can be prohibative, i want to make my work accessible to be viewed, heard, and performed by anyone who wants to engage further.

excited that @forrestwentzel @stopsarah and i will be bringing back this program of music+projections, and that we'll be sharing it at @feedmediaart in erie, alongside other baltimore legends john hoegberg and two weeks!

for baltimore friends who missed this program in march (or for those who came and loved it so much!), we'll be playing at govans presbyterian church next sunday (oct 11th) at 7:30pm. pennsylvania friends, hope to see you in erie on the 16th!

super excited to announce Duo Raconteur, a new duo between myself and @caldersprinkle focusing on music written for narrator and piano! after premiering calder's piece Bargains (featured briefly here!), we knew we wanted to help create and share more works for narrator+piano and explore what this medium could be!

additionally, we're BEYOND excited to announce a call for proposals for composers/music makers to create new works for narrator/piano for our first solo performance as a duo in 2027! i encourage every composer friend i have on here to apply; we're wanting to have an extremely collaborative process in building+shaping this works, and we both would love to connect further with composers interested! all details regarding timeline+application materials can be found in the application form, link in my bio!

iteration 20 of james romig's still, for solo piano

extremely excited to be part of @jonahbrock.art's celebration of life apartment gallery show, happening friday, september 25th, starting at 5pm! i'll be playing starting at 5:30, and i'll be playing all 60mins of james romig's still, as well as other ambient and quiet piano music! hope to see y'all there, this is an extremely special show you won't want to miss!

still consists of 43 iterations of gradually morphing set of 24 pitches, organized meticulously in a beautiful unfolding that explores different subsets of said pitches over the course of a full hour. the 43 iterations are connected by a rhythmic grid that stays consistent throughout, offering listeners a lifeline to this evolution. still was written in response to the artwork of clyfford still, and is a perfect companion to this showcase and the incredible artists featured.

excerpt from to remember it all, to deserve the children by patrick flannery

to remember it all, to deserve the children, written for disassembled bassoon and piano, asks what happens to tradition in times of apocalypse. the disassembled (and equally dissembled) bassoon, brought to life by @blairblake._, keens and sighs amongst distant remnants of things familiar: a major chord, a consistent click moving forward, a disjointed melody. distant reasons to persevere.

it was such a joy to bring this piece to fruition in collaboration with blair, who was willing (and eager) to deconstruct to create something new and beautiful. you can listen to the full piece on my youtube (link in bio), as well as check out the score on my website (link also in bio) containing beautiful illustrations from @marcforrest_ink :)

thank you to everyone who came out to community/peace/motion this past weekend! this was an extremely special program, and i'm so happy to have shared this music here in baltimore. i'm already planning the next time i can play in these special venues again!

northbound/southbound, my piece for improvising pianist and video, was the onus for putting together this concert, and is a culmination of the time i've spent in baltimore thus far. you can listen and watch the full piece on my youtube, at the link in my bio.

northbound/southbound by patrick flannery

northbound/southbound, for improvising pianist and video, is a tribute to baltimore’s light rail system. my many hours of riding the light rail system (whether in commuting somewhere specific, or just in exploring a new city) brought me a sense of connection to baltimore and the community here. over a year ago, i decided to begin recording videos while riding the light rail to highlight moments of beauty within the mundane, as these were the moments that grounded me within the city.

northbound/southbound is entirely improvised, with the performer given a near-blank score with only the necessary information to correspond with the video. the improvisation performed during this piece will be guided and shaped by the video, compiled from hours of footage recorded. throughout the 27-minute runtime, northbound/southbound asks audiences to reflect on how something easily overlooked, such as a public transportation system, can connect people to a community, and the beauty that can be found outside a window (or within a train car).

i've been working on this piece for years, and i'm so excited to share it with y'all for the first time (alongside other new works for solo piano) at @2640space on august 1st at 7pm and at govans presbyterian church on august 2nd at 3pm!

“the baltimore peace movement is an organization committed to reducing the murder rate in baltimore city. when someone is killed by violence in baltimore, people are invited to gather at the site of the murder for a sacred space ritual. led by the peace movement’s co-organizer erricka bridgeford, these are not vigils, but ‘a way to put love & light into the place where our sister was taken by violence… to make it sacred ground.’ others have photographed, filmed, and written about these sacred space rituals. love into concrete offers my response to the experience in music.”

excerpt from innerlit windowscape by @phil_thompson_music

innerlit windowscape asks the question of what happens behind the windows you pass by; specifically, the windows visible from the n-train overlooking downtown brooklyn. In the words of phil, “at night, those dark pillars present a code, a cryptogram formed out of binary characters: lit windows, dark windows. behind each lit window is a person, a life, a world. behind each dark window could be anything – or nothing.”

throughout the piece, lights flicker on and off, and other moments seem to flicker in response. these moments of flickering build to a chaotic frenzy, where “a chorus of windows from all across the city unstick themselves from their concrete and steel and marches across the sky.” this piece, to me, reflects a beautiful individuality that any city, whether brooklyn or baltimore, will hold, alongside the power that individuals can harness when coming together as a collective.

mvt. vi from as memories frozen in time melt away by aaron reising (@areising021)
performed by patrick flannery

as memories frozen in time melt away for piano is composed of twelve short movements organized in two parts. the first six movements focus on memories that remain intact, while the final six focus on memories that are fading. moving through various styles, tempos, and meters, this piece exists as one whole despite the disjunct nature of each movement.

mvt. vi, the final miniature from the first section of the piece, struck me when i first played through the piece as a moment of beauty and reflection, like a singular beam of light shining into a dark room. this piece’s focus on fading memories (and how that idea informed the tonal world of the piece) evoked, to me, the importance of fostering a collective memory with those we hold closest to us, lest the memories frozen in our solitary minds melt away.

community/peace/motion
a concert of new music for piano
august 1st and 2nd

i'm extremely excited to announce community/peace/motion, two performances of new works for solo piano (including two world premieres!), connected by themes of collective memory, remembrance, and continuous motion towards a strong, equitable community here in baltimore. this program is deeply inspired by and indebted to the work done by the @baltimorepeacemovement, who have advocated for peace and community within baltimore, and will continue to do so this month and into the future.

this program, featuring works by @jadashi, @areising021, @phil_thompson_music, and myself, has been incredibly special to put together, and i am extremely excited to share it at @2640space on august 1st at 7pm and at the govans presbyterian church on august 2nd at 3pm (with support from @wieldflowerarts!) both concerts are free to attend, and i'd love to see y'all there :) share with anyone you think would dig!

art by the deeply wonderful and incredibly talented @marcforrest_ink, who hand-carved the stamps that make this beautiful poster! note that each poster is unique with one of multiple different additions :3
