Yesterday, I attended a high school regional meet to support my niece @morganb_37 (and cheer on Coach @mattjordanlangenberg and @grandvillepowerlifting . I always cheer for anyone who steps on the platform. Just can’t help myself)

As I was driving home, I was trying to remember way back to last century when I first competed. It was just shy a month of 40 years ago. No coach, no specialty bars (just gym bars), no real idea of what to do. I’m pretty sure I was the only competitor west of Lansing to compete that day. 225 teenage lifters. Took all day and we all had a blast. I missed National qualifying total by 25 pounds. 2 months later I got that. A month after that I was in Maine competing at Teenage Nationals.

Time flies by very, very quickly. Everyone older than you tells you to enjoy that time, but I don’t think anyone ever listens.

Yesterday, moving things around, I knocked over a box of pictures that we divided up after our parents passed.

Some pieces of paper fell out and I noticed my mom’s handwriting. This is from a powerlifting meet I did in 2011. Mom and Dad attended every sporting event (amongst numerous other events like Boy Scouts, Church, etc.) of all four of their children, as many as they could of their grandchildren and would still be going for their great grandchildren, if they could.

When I took up powerlifting again in my late 30s through my 40s, I told mom she didn’t need to go and sit in uncomfortable bleachers at the most boring spectator sport, but yet she followed me and took notes.

She still “showed up” (maybe not in person, but 100% in spirit) even when I told her she didn’t need to, it was just a hobby, but she still showed up. by @patrickrileycameron

I miss going to powerlifting meets as often as I used to, but when I do it still feels like a reunion. I’ve made some amazing friends through this sport and we pick up right where we left off. @lancesgym @iamchrisnoble taken in Raw Strength by @patrickrileycameron

Coincidence??? For Daddy/Daughter dates with my oldest, we would hit the locally owned bookstore @schulerbooks. Today, as I was driving by Schuler Books, I took a video and sent it to her. She replied with a pic of her wearing her Schuler Books shirt. Coincidence??? Hmmmm (P.S. she currently resides in New Mexico, but we still hit Schuler when she’s home) by @patrickrileycameron
