Life Update: Katherine and I are engaged! God is good!

Katherine and I met in 2016 in College Station. She was there with her husband John and their four kids. Their family quickly became one of my favorites! Following seminary I moved to Houston to work with John at Emmanuel Baptist Church (EBC).

John and I were the only staff, so we spent all day together and he quickly became one of my best friends. John tragically passed away in July 2020. He heroically sacrificed his life so that others would live.

Two months ago, I got a call from Nathan Lino, a Houston pastor and friend. After 30 seconds of small talk he says, "I can't help but wonder if God is going to call you to marry Katherine Powell."

This immediately became the most epic call of my life because I had developed feelings for Kat starting late last year. Nathan's relationship with John carried significant weight as I processed the call and it removed any feelings of guilt I had with John being one of my best friends.

I called Phillip Bethancourt, one of my best friends who was also one of John's best friends. Phillip told me he had also been praying about us for several months and encouraged me to pursue her if I was interested.

A few days later we had the most non-traditional first date! Very direct and intense conversation, but appropriate for the circumstances. I called my brother on the way home and told him unless she pulled the plug we were going to get married!

Since then, I’ve gone to College Station every chance I got I to spend time with her and the kids, Gunner (12), Bennett (10), Ada Kate (8), and Reese (5). My favorite days have been the simple ones hanging out with her and the kids.

Monday night we had a “kid-free” date night while on vacation. As Kat was getting ready for supper I spoke with the kids and let them know how much I loved their mom before asking for their permission to propose to her. They all gave their support and were excited for the evening!

We walked on the beach until we were in the perfect spot, in view of the balcony where the kids and her family would be watching. I asked the question and she said YES! God is good! taken in Rosemary Beach, Florida by @patrickrmcginty

Adopted for life!!

What a special day as we finalized my adoption of these four incredible kids!

This milestone is another example of how kind the Lord has been to our family. He has knit our hearts together in a way that can only be explained by pointing to Him and His love for us.

It’s also a heavy reminder of the fact that their dad, John Powell, is no longer here. We will never understand why God called him him home so soon. We miss him, love him, and remember him as we’re simultaneously blown away at how the Lord has brought beauty from ashes!

Practically, nothing will change in our day to day life. This legal action reflects a reality and heart posture that has been true from the time we got married! We want the kids to keep Powell as their last name as a way to honor John and carry on the Powell legacy.

What a gift from the Lord this first Sunday at Harvest Church!

We gathered as His people to worship the risen Christ, to hear His Word, and to enjoy fellowship together!

Yesterday was bittersweet…my final Sunday at Central! This church has meant so much to our family, and we are deeply grateful for the ways God has used it to shape us.

Thank you @centralbcs and @pbethancourt for being a church that doesn’t just gather, but faithfully sends! What a gift to be part of a body that lives on mission.

Now we step forward in faith, trusting Christ’s promise that He will build His church.

I’m excited to share that God has called our family to plant Harvest Church (@harvestbcs) here in College Station!

Harvest Church exists to glorify God by making and multiplying disciples of Jesus Christ.

The Lord has faithfully led and provided, and we are trusting Him to build His church through the preaching of His Word and the power of the gospel.

Please pray for us as we prepare to launch on March 29th! Pray that Christ would be exalted and that many would come to know Him as Lord and Savior.
