Tending to Our Garden
Painted Steel
8.5 ft. x 5 ft. x 3ft.
November 2023

Dedicated to my grandmother, Alice

A Pansy grows and blooms in a plastic container you’d buy at the local garden nursery for $1.99. It is waiting to be picked up, squeezed gently with care and released from its plastic womb. Your bare hands are covered in soil as you part the dirt to create a small cradle - it's future home where it will live through the seasons until it returns to the ground.

A memorialization of the spring planting of annuals (pansies) in my grandmother's and mother's garden. Each year, Spring reminds us to tend and care for our gardens, our community, and our selves. by @patrickwillowstudio

This is my second public sculpture in the last year and I couldn’t be more appreciative of the opportunity to work with this community. Working with other activists with the hope for change is very important to my practice. Thank you to Glenn Williams and the Adams! 💙

This piece was inspired by my grandmother, Alice, and I dedicated it to her while making it.

I am excited to share my work “30 Day Supply (PrEP) at SNAG’s 51st Comference in San Diego in both the SNAG In Focus 2024 Virtual Exhibition and in-person SNAG Juried Student Exhibition!

4 in. X 1.5 in. X 22 in.
Heirloom Sterling Silver, 1.2mm Diamond, 10 Black Opals, 10 White Opals, 23k Gold Gilt Foil, Leather, Cotton

30 Day Supply (PrEP) is a meditation on the gay, queer, and MSM daily ritual of taking PEP and PrEP in our current era of the HIV/AIDS crisis which is still an ongoing crisis in parts of the US and the world. Despite the introduction of PrEP over 10 years ago and educational campaigns, HIV-Stigma and HIV-Bias remains a problem in our communities today.

Undetectable = Untransmittable

After the lost of a generation of gay/queer people from HIV/AIDS, it was important to me to recycle my grandparents’ heirloom silverware when creating this piece as I consider how we as queer people pass down our wealth (of knowledge, objects, histories) to our queer ancestors in community and our chosen.

After much trial and error (75 pills, 4 bottle caps, 3 desiccants, and 7 bottles), i was proud to finish this piece which is deeply meaningful to me. The bottle was cast in 3 parts that were formed and soldered together. The 30 pill chain can detach to be stored within the working twist-closure bottle with the “silica” desiccant containing 20 black and white opals. The bottle has a broken 23k gold gilt foil safety seal and cotton desiccant inside.

Tending to Our Garden (for Alice)

Buying a plastic container for $1.99 of Pansies is a symbol of the small investments and acts of care that we can make that have a much larger and greater impact on our communities than we may imagine or understand. This piece was made for a community garden in Milwaukee that is supported by a sweet couple whose care for their community is abundant.

Additionally, I made this piece as a memorial for my grandmother Alice who passed over 20 years ago. My grandfather’s greatest fear was that she and her love would be forgotten - Alice remains with us in our hearts today and always.

May we always remember the love and care within our families, chosen and familial.
