“Bright Tree” IS OUT NOW ON ALL PLATFORMS!!!!! After much toil and hard work, I’m very excited to finally have this out in the world!!! This project would never have happened if it weren’t for the tireless creative energy of @daniel_waddingham , @isaacgunnoo and @kyrieandersonmusic who together helped me shape and craft this music and the identity of this band o ver the last three years. I feel extraordinarily luck to count these humans among my friends and co-conspirators. And a gigantic thank you to @souptinbaby for her unwavering guidance and inepiration in the creatinon of this music, this project has forever changed my view of the creative process. To @pattelfer the ever faithful and energetic for his help crafting this sound, and to my sister @kat_kalaitzi for her amazing work with the cover and graphics (the CDs will be arriving in my hands soon and they look GREAT). And a great thank you to the very large crew of musicians who have given me their time and energy and helped to create the sound of the Dean Kalait quartet over the creation of this music, the echo of your voices can be felt strongly in the weave of this music. And last but not least, thank you to all of you wonderful humans who have lent your time and your ears to me and my music, it really means the world to me. From the bottom of my heart I send all the love and warmth I can your way. Love and Warmth from the Western Suburbs, Dean. :) ❀ “Where water meets land my ship is moored. My body may be imprisoned, But my mind walks ever free Where the sky meets the sea, You will yet find part of me, Sitting beneath the brightest tree.” by @pattelfer

After six years of creating, experimenting and following the music wherever it led us, @__oscarjn and I are incredibly proud to announce that our debut album, “Bright Phantoms” will be releasing on Saturday 07 November 2026 at Bennetts Lane Jazz Club. This album brings voice and double bass together in a restless and richly textured sound world. Weaving together fragments of post-punk, folk, modern classical, noise, found percussion, free improvisation and rock. At its centre is the interplay between double bass and voice: layered echoes and tidal harmonies move through dissonant extended techniques, abrasive textures and moments of quiet reflection. What began on a whim, became a six-year process of recording and reflection, driven by a shared love of the sea, the loss of dear friends and the shifting landscapes of life. Over time, “Bright Phantoms” expanded beyond its original voice and double bass format into a broader sonic world, bringing together works by @colinstetson @nickcaveofficial @anohni @bjork and @adriannelenker . The record was brought to life with @pattelfer (Brian Brown Studio VCA + @sydneyroadstudios ) and @lachlanjc at the helm, alongside contributions from renowned Australian musicians @james.marcus.sherlock (Guitar), @nirantrumpet (Trumpet), @elliotlambmusic (Trombone) and @natashafearnside_clarinetist (Bass Clarinet), as well as found sound, poetry, analogue manipulation and extended instrumental techniques. “Bright Phantoms” is a slow burn: a collection of meditative and powerful statements about memory, impermanence and all that we hold dear. Six years later, we are proud to finally present the album as a genesis - a beginning born from patience, experimentation, friendship and the enduring possibility of making something special together. Hello wonderful friends of Instagram!!!!! I come to you with news: the crew of wonderful humans I’m lucky to call my bandmates (and many more behind the scenes creative enablers) and I have been hard at work this last year creating a new album for you all! “Bright Tree” will be out on all platforms (and physical CDs) on October the 17th!!!! “Nothing is begun, sound shifts silent. Eyes and ears wide. Seeds of the future, sown some days past, Bare their first fruit, but not their last. New footprints appear, four are one in walking. Standing tall, moving slow, Your branches gleam in otherworldly glow. Long in the making, longer in the living, Many more things may this thing make. All stories are told here in the now. Four are one again in the boughs of the bright tree. Slower now shifts sound through air. Nothing is Finished
” Inspired by the legendary music of the Wayne Shorter quartet and their “Comprovisational” philosophies and the structural “Flexible Architecture” of the legendary Andrea Keller (@souptinbaby ), I set out to record this album with the help of three of my dearest musical collaborators and fellow adventurers @daniel_waddingham @kyrieandersonmusic and @isaacgunnoo . I’m very proud of all the work we’ve been getting up to, and thanks to the awesome recording work of @pattelfer you’ll soon be able to hear it. I’m excited to announce there will be a launch gig soon on November the 14th at the awesome @cross.st.music hall! I’m keen as a green bean to show you all what we’ve been working on. I’m sending you all as much good energy as I can muster. All these photos have been taken by various awesome photographers including @gearingandy @nirantrumpet @bella.cloud and yours truly. Stay tuned for more info!!!!!! Love and warmth from the western suburbs, Dean. :) 💗💗💗 by @pattelfer
Lyrebird Brass were excited to record Elliott Gyger’s brass trio “In the Presence of So Much Sky” on Friday. Elliott’s use of horn, flugelhorn, and alto trombone is beautiful and inventive, playing with combinations of timbres and exploring each instrument’s natural harmonic series. We premiered the work at @the_cimf back in May, and are looking forward to sharing the recording when it is eventually released. The trio is part of his cycle of seven instrumental pieces inspired by Kate Grenville’s novel “The Idea of Perfection.” The complete cycle will receive its premiere in 2027. It was an absolute pleasure to work with Pat Telfer on the recording — we’re incredibly fortunate to have such a masterful team of recording engineers at @vca_mcm. by @pattelfer
