Teacher highlight of the month: Patty Dean

Hello my name is Patty Dean and I am a classically trained Pilates teacher at Hummingbird Pilates studio in Beverly Hills. I am also the West Coast teacher trainer with Classical Kulture Pilates. I am from the classical Pilates generation of hands on tactile cueing, guiding the client to understand the Pilates Method deeper and encouraging my clients to execute each exercise fully. Hummingbird Pilates studio is my home studio where I will be conducting my Winter Teacher Training programs. Inspiring and motivating the next generation of classically trained Pilates Teachers.

When I first started teaching Pilates in 1999/2000 (before the trend) not too many people knew what it was. Actually my Grandmother would call it Paleta’s (which means popsicle in Spanish) I would crack up and say “Grandma it’s Pilates”

Fast forward 25 years later the name Pilates is everywhere!! It’s a lot of hype around it. It is my duty to respect and educate the legacy of Joesph Pilates and his method. His method has changed my life and my clients lives through out the years. I have clients that have avoided surgery because of the classical Pilates method.

I am honored to be a Teacher Trainer with @classicalkulturepilates educating the next generation of classical Pilates Teachers.

So before you jump into a class that is advertising that it’s a Pilates class. Do your research to see if it is really Pilates. Don’t short change yourself to just the Reformer which I like to call the popular kid on the block. You need the Mat and all the other apparatus to make it Pilates. It is a sequence of exercises for a reason and what’s threaded through those exercises are other apparatus.

Pilates should not be picked apart. It’s not just the Reformer. It’s so much more!

Like I mentioned in the beginning of this video. I am here to educate.

I’m over the moon excited to finally share my interview with @pilatesstylemagazine with guest editor & friend @chazknightpilates. Thank you for highlighting me and the high school student athletes with @ourown program.

I’m immensely grateful to have been able to design a Pilates studio in a public high school & train their athletes 2x a week in their Pilates studio. The group sessions were conducted on the Mat, Reformer, Wunda Chair, small barrel, ladder barrel and foot corrector.

Joseph Pilates would be so proud that the youth is continuing his method & asking questions about who he is/was. They LOVE Pilates class!!

This approach of the exercise Elephant was taught to me by @russopilates, this gives the client a baseline to safely learn the exercise and for the client to comprehend what you’re asking of them. Thank you Carrie Russo!

Taking a client on the outside of the reformer emphasizes the stabilization of the upper body as the lower body moves from the powerhouse.

After decades of teaching- I’m still happily going down the rabbit hole of the classical Pilates method.

At Classical Kulture Pilates we teach the full system which includes all of Joesph Pilates apparatus. The apprentices at our LA location have been learning Intermediate exercises on the Ladder Barrel & Spine Corrector this past weekend.

@pilatesbyzola demonstrated an advance variation of the exercise Tree on the Ladder Barrel showing the apprentices what years of practicing the method can become.

Thank you to @opus.pilates for creating the space for at Classical Kulture Pilates LA to hold our teacher trainings in.

Our next LA training sessions starts January 2027…Limited space available.

Ten decades, half a century and free! The year of ascension, lifted and sure of myself in the most loving way. In the abyss of gratefulness for my health, my joy and my teenagers who teach me so much about myself.

When @movewithmarquette reached out to me to let me know that she will be in LA to visit one of her daughters. She excitedly put together a trio Pilates session with me.

Her daughters were introduced to the @gratz_pilates electric high chair finding the connection to the powerhouse & beyond.

What a blessing it is as a family to be able to move & connect together through the classical Pilates method.
