New work, made in Brighton Studio.

These paintings are built from charcoal, soft pastel, oil and graphite, worked directly and gesturally. The marks aren’t illustrating anything. I think of them as proto-languages: something that wants to be said before there are words for it. I’m interested in bringing a sense of aliveness into that pre-lingual way of making, and in staying open rather than trying to fully understand. Understanding, when it comes, is a brief recognition rather than something I can hold on to.

This body of work is made alongside another series still to come at Cell Studios. More soon.

Brighton live music Juno 60 been tucked away for safety over the past year. Started a process of fixing the keys and now want to get it fully refurbed. It is unbeatable on sounds even after 45years of being attached to me !!!!! not many things survive by @paturnerlee

Finding more space in my work as I move on from the RCA course. More light, more colour, and a little more understanding of what the marks are doing.

This is the painting cropped to how it would look stretched. I’m testing how it holds when the edges are fixed, and so far it’s working better than I expected.

Still unstretched, still in progress.

Also got the tee shirt but not wearing it. Hats of to the amazing cohort of wonderful artists. Deep love and gratitude to @eveturnerlee et al for all the support by @paturnerlee

"Where the work's gone since RCA: different ground mixes creating different kinds of resistance — surfaces to erase into, surfaces that push back against a gesture, surfaces that let it slide. Building a vocabulary this way, one mix at a time. The gestures that earn their place carry forward into what's next."

Now I’m ready to paint.

Everything here is still weather — charcoal, pastel, laid down before the oil arrives to settle it. This is the pressure system building, not yet the storm. Memory doesn’t come to me as narrative; it comes as fronts colliding, gathering somewhere below language, waiting to be given a body.

I think the studio’s real work happens right here, before the paint — in staying with what hasn’t resolved yet instead of rushing to make it mean something. The oil will come and hold a version of this still. But right now it’s only atmosphere, only weather, only the moment before.

Get to work @rca_painting #rca26 preparation underway. Studio, mid-process — two works caught in the raw scaffolding of mark-making. These are RSG stages: the marks laid down before resolution sets in, where line, colour and gesture are still finding their relation to one another. My practice lives here more than anywhere else — charcoal, pastel, , oil, moving without trying to fully understand where it's going. The aim isn't to grasp the image but to stay open to it, letting recognition arrive, if it arrives, as something fleeting rather than fixed. by @paturnerlee

Unrolling and airing in Brighton both paintings will at some point be re stretched so nice to see them again. Last September 8th the journey began with the 200cm x 170cm growth @cell_studios by @paturnerlee

Paintings are built up in layers — charcoal, pastel and ink grounds sealed with glue, then thin oil worked over the top — with marks functioning as a pre-linguistic register akin to poetry. by @paturnerlee
