We’re excited to announce our first participation in Frieze London’s Artist-to-Artist section – debuting a new body of work by Vienna-based Romanian artist Paul Robas (b. 1989) invited by Louise Giovanelli. Robas’ evocative and multi-layered intimate paintings delve into the ephemeral nature of memory and the human experience. Through experimentation and a particular attention posed on the surface of the canvas, his practice explores the tension between the real and the imagined, crafting works that blur the boundaries between these states. In his work, the reproduced image becomes a site of transformation, where imperfections and manipulation are integral to the creation of meaning. Image: Paul Robas (work in progress), 2026. If you’re in Olomouc, Czech Republic, don’t miss the works of Paul Robas (b. 1989, Romania) in the group exhibition ‘Transylvanian Painting Today’, curated by Jane Neal at Telegraph Gallery (@telegraph.cz). The exhibition continues until 11 June 2026. ‘Translyvanian Painting Today’ focuses on figurative painting – one of the hallmarks of the Transylvanian art scene thanks to the so-called Cluj School - a group of artists who emerged on the international scene in the early 21st century. Currently On View | Paul Robas: Almost There, on view through 14 February, 2026 The paintings remove context by having a selective frame, only fragments of the subject are available, creating an unnerving tension in the stillness of the painting. Employed through painting in a similar way to how the Pictures Generation used the lens of a camera. At the same time, a laugh can become a scream, or a deep slumber can become a death rattle. For inquiries, email collect@makeroom.la or message us on our collector hotline on WhatsApp +1 (213) 697-9422. by @paul.robas
A painting that feels like a picture of a family member you never had. Longing eyes that look out in mourning, or a tired body and the way it slumps over your grandmother’s chair. The celebratory walk your uncle had that day, when he got too drunk. Thinking about the lives of these people brings you into your body. It turns your life into a story told by those who will come after you. Placing yourself into the shoes of everyone close to you brings out a sublime feeling of the vastness of all of our lives. Paul Robas embraces quiet moments, removed from time and resting in stillness. The Vienna-based Romanian artist contemplates the finitude of human existence in his work. He holds onto a moment and distorts it into a universal experience; photographs of friends, moments of lighting, and fragmented imagery create a particular distant familiarity. These paintings prompt you to reflect on how moments are remembered, the times you have already lived through, the fleeting present, and the future that is yet to come. Now Open: Artissima 2025. Come visit us in the Main Section at Booth Orange 4, where we’re presenting new works by Zurich-based, Italian artist Ilaria Vinci (b.1991) and Vienna-based, Romanian artist Paul Robas (b. 1989). The duo presentation draws inspiration from the theme of the 2025 edition of @artissimafair ‘Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth.’ Both artists approach this prompt by exploring the unstable terrains of memory, myth, and transformation — each using their distinct visual languages to blur boundaries between the real and the imagined. Together, their works extend an invitation to step beyond the immediate and to consider not just what we see, but how we dream, remember, and imagine otherwise. We are delighted to participate in Artissima 2025 with a duo presentation of new works by Vienna-based, Romanian artist Paul Robas (b.1989) and Zurich-based, Italian artist Ilaria Vinci (b. 1991) Paul Robas will present a suite of new atmospheric paintings that drift between the intimate and the elusive. His figures emerge from dreamlike environments, caught in moments of introspection or gentle exchange, always on the edge of becoming or vanishing. These works dwell in memory’s unstable zones — where perception fragments and reassembles itself through time, desire, and loss. In Robas’ work, painting becomes a metaphor for the mind’s own rearrangement of images and feelings, constantly restructured, never fixed.
