A common problem I hear from construction business owners is "subbies"

They wanted someone to step in and just do it like they would

They thought that "they should know how to do it"

And when that construction business owners gets a "string of bad subbies" they just think that every one is shit, give up and tell the world that all subbies are a nightmare

Heres what I learned after working with thousands of sub-contractors over the years

99% of the time - they werent shit subbies... I was a shit leader

Now I'm not niaive enough to think that there arne't wrong uns out there - there are, but if as the construction business owner, you carry out your onboarding properly - its now more likely a leadership issue

I hadnt explained in full what i wanted, in what time frame, to what standard, how it should be finished and what success looked like

Just "Fit us that kitchen mate" or "Whop the house in matt white"

When the standard that I never shared isnt achieved in terms of quality, speed and inclusions - I call them cowboys... but truthfully that was rarely true

When you grow that construction business of yours, you have to develop yourself as a leader, to accept personal responsibility for the results that keep showing up for you and doing something about it

Ready to up your leadership game - DM me "GROWTH" and lets talk about next steps by @paul_tinker_32

Pricing up construction work is often an unknown and it can feel like the bigger the number, the bigger the risk

Loads of unknowns, loads of variables, loads of risk and for some that can feel stressful, even a bit scary

Equally because of those things, business owners believe that a system can’t exist because everything is bespoke

Every job is different

And I can tell you … it’s not

You simply need some structure to remove the guesswork, remove the fear, remove the perceived nuance and start pricing up profitably

I’m unpacking this full framework tomorrow morning free live and online and if you read this far, you’ll want the link

Comment PPP and I’ll send it to you

You got to the end of the week yesterday - client paid - job done

Make sure you save this post - run these 4 financial checks NOW and then do them on every job moving forwards:

1. Close every penny of revenue - check that you fully collected deposits, all stage payments due, every variation and note any retentions held and the due date for you to follow up

2. Stop treating cash as profit - £100k in the bank is going to carry LOTS of liability - subbies, suppliers, CT, VAT, CIS, overhead and staff - keep a track using a cashflow forecatser to realise whats yours and what's not

3. Unclaimed variations - every unclaimed "extra" is work you've paid for for that client

4. Review the teams performance (including clients, subbies & suppliers) and use that data to score everyone and ensure you dont make the same hiring mistakes on the next job and retain your best performers

3 BONUS TIPS: Revenue is not profit, Labour is not profit & Job finished is not job closed

Run an established construction business? Want to know what your jobs actually make before all the moeny disappears?

Comment "STRUCTURE" and ill show you how you can close every job commercially, operationally and with the facts in front of you by @paul_tinker_32
