Vote for your favorite. Last photo is of me and friends on the water, but I’m not in the running for most stylish, though the cute couple behind me is. For this year’s #koningsdag (Kingsday) post, I wanted to highlight some of the stylish and fun outfits that I saw. Everyone dresses in orange because the royal family bears the name “House of Orange” (Huis van Oranje) and it’s the national color. You will also see the colors of the flag #🇳🇱, but otherwise every canal, street and building is covered in orange. I will post a reel later of the festivities and craziness.🧡

Foggy days in Amsterdam. 😶‍🌫️ I’m loving it. There’s something a little magical and wonderfully spooky about fog. Maybe it’s because it’s easy to imagine yourself in the pages of a mystery novel. Or maybe because fog feels like a winter blanket—cozy and enticing. And being on the water amplifies the feeling. I always think of the movie, The Fog, original and remake. Both campy but fun, if you like that sort of thing like I do. Happy foggy January, everyone! #Amsterdamwinter

The Secret Garden was a creative space like no other, but as the saying goes “All good things must come to an end.” A hidden location where hundreds of artists have left their mark over the last 3 years is being demolished for a new building. Curators Brian from @nicholas_groente_and_fruit and @chinnybond worked together to bring in an eclectic group of graffiti and street artists, while in turn created a space that brought people together to experience, what I can only describe as, a magical wonderland. From wall-to-wall murals to figurines hidden in every crack and crevice to large-scale installations, accompanied by a trampoline and picnic tables for adults and kids alike.

So how did this magical place come about? Well, thank goodness for Brian’s curiosity, good neighbors, and a chill property owner. The Secret Garden began in true Guerrilla style fashion. Enclosed and hidden by surrounding buildings, it was a large space of rubble that sat empty and abandoned, just behind Brian’s shop. He and his neighbors joined together and opened the space to families from the street. The idea for artists to join in immediately followed and it became a canvas of opportunity. And so it began. Artwork after artwork. The commercial property owner eventually found out about the visitors (I’ll let you fill in the blank about how), but instead of putting a stop to it, he gave permission to continue! He said the artists and neighbors were welcome to use the space until he started construction. Unfortunately, that day has come, but to have such a place for 3 years is something to be grateful for, and it will definitely be remembered.

In honor of the Garden, there will be an Expo this Saturday at @nicholas_groente_and_fruit at St. Nicholaasstraat 19 from 15:00-20:00 with 14 artists!

Amsterdam hosts several jazz festivals a year, one of which is @redlightjazz . The fest happened on June 6-8 this year. I met friends to see The Jazzy Rabbits on the terrace of Hotel Prins Hendrik, a spot sadly known for the death of jazz icon, Chet Baker, who fell out of a hotel window in 1988. The festival pays tribute to him every year. From the oldest jazz club in Amsterdam, @casablanca.amsterdam , to @bimhuis to @tenclub_theartofcuriosity to @zilt_whiskybar , and more than 20 other locations, you can see over 60 artists/bands play.

Swipe to the end to hear a little taste of The Jazzy Rabbits (pictured above), who were old-school fabulous! I love New Orleans’ style jazz in the era of Louis Armstrong, and this band delivered! 10/10.

This week is @injazznl ,a festival and conference, which showcases many Dutch jazz musicians. Folks can see shows at BIMHUIS in Amsterdam on the 26th and at LantarenVenster and MOOD in Rotterdam on the 27th.

Happy World Bike Day! One of my favorite things about living in Amsterdam is getting to ride a bike every day (even in the rain…because yeah, that’s also life here). On top of the environmental benefit, I’ll take bike maintenance over car maintenance (and costs) any day. And being on my bikes, the oma fiets (grandma bike) or Trek, makes me happy. Having a bad day? Feeling cranky? Get on a bike. 😎 It’s a dopamine-inducing daily exercise boost. #bikelife #bikehappy

Photo recap of Kingsday in Amsterdam! Descriptions of photos are ⬇️ It was rainy, sunny, wild and then some. 😅🫣🇳🇱 It gets crazy, folks.

Photo 1: Dancing in the middle of the street to one of the many DJs setup in the Jordaan neighborhood of Amsterdam.

Photo 2: A road or a canal? 😆 A bottleneck of boats become so jammed packed on Herengracht in Amsterdam that it’s difficult to see the water.

Photo 3: Partygoers greet each other in the Jordaan neighborhood of Amsterdam. Kingsday is an all day event, and for many, it goes all night too.

Photo 4: I always find it a good idea to follow the hearts. A man with a heart ballon in De Negen Straatjes (The 9 Streets) of Amsterdam dances to a DJ in the street. @heartsinamsterdam

Photo 5: The flag of the Netherlands, with an orange streamer, hangs in the Jordaan neighborhood near the Westertoren. Orange represents the royal family, who are members of the House of Orange, dating back to 1544 when William of Orange inherited the royal title. Koningsdag (Kingsday) is a national holiday and birthday celebration of the Netherlands current king, Willem-Alexander.

Recap of Koningsdag (Kingsday) 2024! 🇳🇱 This is a national holiday to celebrate the King’s birthday in the Netherlands. It gets just a “little” crazy in Amsterdam. The day starts with residents holding a city-wide flea market on the sidewalks, and then the streets fill up with partygoers, DJs, locals and tourists alike. Photos to come…

Back home folks often ask me what it’s like to cycle around the Netherlands and to no longer own a car. Here it is — a little slice of my two-wheel happiness. I still appreciate driving with the windows down and the music up in the summer when I’m back visiting the US. But I don’t miss owning a car. Bike life is one of my absolute favorite parts about moving here. Now…I just need to find some fun forest trials and a mountain bike, and I’ll be extra happy. 😁😎 #bikelife #amsterdam

Some snippets of life here in winter vs summer in the Netherlands 😊 Both have benefits (more so when it actually snows and the canals freeze over), but I love the late sunsets, evening cycles, music coming from people’s windows, terrace drinks and warmth of summer.
