Thank you to everyone who turned out @powerhousemuseum for ‘Beautiful Freak In The Machine’ last Thursday. Truly an honor to be a part of this incredible exhibit alongside so many artists I admire. Grateful to showcase a restropective of my body of work across fashion, fillm and rave over nearly 2 decades. 💚

For those that weren’t able to make it (sadly, including myself due to conflicting work commitments in NYC), here’s some snippets from the event. You can watch more from this special exhibit as part of @vividsydney in my insta highlights, with the video piece coming soon. A personal highlight for me was my dad & stepmom - unbeknownst to me - driving 3 hrs from Canberra to Sydney & back just to check it out (slide 4)🥹

Thank you so much to @velem @powerhousemuseum @anna_may_kirk for generously helping me put this together (and for putting up with my pedantic notes 🤯) And of course forever thankful to the wonderful curator, my dear friend @davidnormanbonney for your kindness, impeccable taste and support over the years. I’m currently redoing my folio, it’s tedious digging through decades of work, much is cringe now but some surprisingly still tracks. This image is more recent - a lo fi visual scrappily put together as part of a campaign for B a few years ago. Obviously red latex, snake skin and, B = a high octane glamour & sex appeal. But for this creative I wanted to underscore these motifs w/ a darker, unnerving tension loaded w/ historical context. Clearly B looks fierce in this clip. poised in red. I split her in half (was inspired by an Alejandro Jaradowsky scene) yet she still looks powerful, in control, strict even, w/ python in tow. This energy is giving Charlotte Rampling from the Night Porter. But i digress,. So visuals aside, what was key was the music, one piece of music in particular.

Sadly we weren’t able to clear the track I wanted, so I’m sharing the edit the way I intended. Listen to the electric viola eerily buzzing from The Velvet Underground’s 1967 seminal classic Venus in furs. This haunting track was inspired by the 1870 novella - of same name - by Austrian author Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. The semi-autobiographical story follows Severin, a man who becomes obsessed with a widow named Wanda, submitting to her as a slave. The book explores themes of domination, submission, & power dynamics in relationships, and famously gave rise to the term “masochism” one of the most significant pieces of literature in the burgeoning fetish underground at the time. Cut to B, (& now knowing the historical relevance of the sound) it hits wickedly harder on many levels.

A brilliant dancer, inspiring teacher & founder of a dance company that has left a lasting impact on American culture, uplifting the talent of black artists for generations.

Au revoir for now dearest Borstch @bertmartirosyan I’ll miss you but excited for your - perhaps life changing! - trip studying abroad at Clown School. (I know it’s actually some esteemed French performing arts class but the former sounds more apt).

Whilst our long friendship is riddled with unforgettable fun memories traveling the world, with a sprinkling of psychological mind games, you know I’ve always kinda love ya. You’ve shown me kindness when I needed it most. And often when I deserved it least.

And ok, admittedly I’ve always been in awe - sometime envious - of your warped, twisted sense of humor. You’re a very talented & funny fucker. And at the very least, destined to become the next Cate Blanchett of Clowns.

Soz for the long sentimental spiel, but I’ve recently learnt that life is too short not to tell the ones you love how you feel about them in the moment. 🥹💚😘 by @paulbui
