A handful of examples of some of the tiny world-building details I designed, painted and composited into @100nightsofhero (directed by the truly amazing @julia_jackman_ ) - now available on Hulu and Disney+

Went a bit loopy putting beaks on absolutely everything (and hiding birds in the background of scenes)...

@100nightsofhero is out on Hulu now in the US! (It's also available to rent, including in the UK etc for the rest of us).

I was the Visual Effects Supervisor for the film, and thought I'd share some making-of stuff. We had a tiny VFX budget for this film, so the VFX team was equally miniscule in size.

There are 124 shots with VFX in them and another 100+ shots that had fixes done by the incredibly talented and lovely Online team at @outpostmtl (thanks especially to @amelie.santerre!)

For those 124 VFX shots on the UK side, @pedro_antoine and Will Ould did amazing jobs on 16 of those shots (I'll show their stuff soon)... and I did the other 108 shots...erm...by myself...

@julia_jackman_ is an incredible director to work with and the creative process with her was so smooth and fulfilling - She let me run wild a little bit. We also planned everything up-front before we shot anything, so any wasted time/effort was kept to an absolute minimum.

So! Most of what you see are good old (digital) matte-paintings that were then tracked & composited into the shot (and sometimes projected onto some very basic 3D geometry if we needed some parallax).
The production design on this film was already gorgeous (@sofiasacomani!) and @xeniaxpatricia shot everything so beautifully, so we tried to match that and add as much extra world-building detail into every shot - usually with me just designing & digitally painting elements by hand on a shot-by-shot basis. In a film about storytelling, there are stories behind every detail we added.

There're VFX that are meant to be indistinguishable from the on-set stuff, and then others that are meant to be a bit more fantastical. The film's based on the wonderful graphic novel (by @isabel_greenberg) so we went for a look that felt more overtly magical in a nod to that.

I've made some little breakdown clips, so for the first one, here're some of those magical elements (with three moons in the sky), with what was shot vs what ended up in the film...

Oh! Also, to be clear: we didn't use AI for any of this (as, other than it's gross, I'm not sure it would have helped on an actual production like this) by @pauldavidrice

@100nightsofhero comes out on Hulu in a couple of days. It's a wonderful film and so very much worth a watch!

I had the absolute privilege of being the VFX Supervisor on it...but what did that actually entail?
"VFX" encompasses such a wide array of skills/disciplines and VFX artists do far more than I think most audiences are aware of. Time and budget on a film set can get very tight and the further along in the process you are, the more things have been offloaded downstream...so VFX artists find themselves at the end of the line having to find solutions for a wide variety of accumulated issues.

For example, I painted this painting of (the properly-lovely human being) @amirelmasry as Jerome in the film.
Is that VFX?
No?
...But I painted it digitally (ie: with a graphics tablet) and then composited into what was shot (an old real painting in the location). It's still my clumsy hand painting it (and with no bloody AI ruining anything), but it's at least two roles in one, just for one very simple shot.

There are LOADS of shots like this in almost everything you watch, these days. Not necessarily paintings! But things that someone had to do in a pinch (maybe even learn for that shot), that if they've done their job right...you won't even notice... by @pauldavidrice

Remember “making-of” features on DVDs? I miss those. I’m not sure if studios make them as enthusiastically/truthfully any more, but you can at least go to the source now (thanks internet) and find breakdown reels if you’re curious.

I worked as a senior VFX artist at Cinesite (London) for a few years and on a load of big stuff with a bunch of lovely people. Two of the films I worked on there got VFX Oscar nominations which was nice.
The first one was Black Panther Wakanda Forever (which lost to Avatar 2) and the other was The Lost Bus (which lost to Avatar 3). I look forward to watching Cinesite’s next amazing Oscar-nominated VFX work…probably when Avatar 4 comes out…

Anyway, if you’re curious as to how things are made these days, they’ve got some reels up on their youtube page. We did the night fight on the bridge (which I reckon’s the best bit of the film too)…

…I also did this (intentionally!) hideous painting as a centrepiece prop for Pigs - 2024, dir: @julia_jackman_

(Oh, and no AI or any rubbish like that, just (digitally) painted with my own wobbly hand and then printed out jumbo-size onto canvas) by @pauldavidrice

Hello! Thought I’d share some bits and bobs from fun things I’ve worked on over the last couple of years.
I was the VFX Supervisor on short film ‘Pigs’ (2024) directed by the truly wonderful @julia_jackman_ , produced by the excellent @mollyameliamurphy , written by the tremendously talented @sojen10 and starring the astounding Bessie Carter & Olivia Williams.
Managed to do a bunch of invisible VFX on this (every shot in this clip is a VFX shot tbh), but I also figured these infinitely-refilling wine glasses would work better as practical effects, so made ‘em with some see-through tubes, a couple of fish-tank pumps and some veeeeery careful drilling… by @pauldavidrice
