Couldn’t end the month of June without a little bit of Pride.

Here’s to more pride, less prejudice; more kindness, more understanding, more celebrating what makes us unique, and far less judging people for simply being themselves. After all, the world is a much brighter place when everyone has room to shine. 🌈

Just a little teaser from Rose: A Tale of Two Suitors … and this is only one of the gentlemen vying for her heart.

So, what is a sensible Nyonya to do? Follow her head, trust her heart... or keep both suitors waiting just a little longer? 🌺

Swipe and you’ll see the teaser in a zine with the other suitor! Find out more at the coming @klzineetc !

Clang, clang, clang went the trolley... and Rose has already claimed the best spot with her favourite new book.

A little trip back to the days when trams 🚃 actually rattled through the streets of the Straits Settlements. Sometimes the best drawings don’t start with a grand plan - just an old Collier’s magazine cover from a century ago, a spark of inspiration, and a sketchbook waiting to be filled.

Swipe to see the original by Anita Parkhurst. Anita Parkhurst was an American illustrator celebrated for her vibrant magazine covers and stylish, confident women. Her bold compositions perfectly captured the charm and energy of the Jazz Age.

I couldn’t not do a homage at least for the #monthofmasters26 though a bit early for the free choice challenge this week.

Inktober D19

This was actually based on a conversation I had a while ago after a friend broke up! With her crying out ‘Mau kahwen jugak!’

Rose and Basil find themselves on the balcony commiserating over the existential crisis that is marriage. Confused about their purpose in life, whether they were born to live, love, or simply continue the ancestry and legacy on demand.

With family pressure mounting and matchmaking schemes lurking around every corner, perhaps the only sensible thing left to do is hide behind an ornamental tree and question the meaning of existence together.

Yes it’s Inktober! Though I’m also adding in prompts from @ur___mu with their comic book panel challenge. So both existentialism from them and confused from the official prompts!

The siblings gather at a party to commiserate over their hopelessly complicated love lives, wondering how romance became so much messier than their parents’ and grandparents’ generation made it out to be. At this rate, even the rat scurrying beneath their balcony seems to be having better luck in love!

Yes it’s Inktober! Though I’m also adding in prompts from @ur___mu with their comic book panel challenge. So both rats from them and flightless from the official prompts!

Rose has devised a rather ingenious contraption to hide from her horrible suitors and reclaim some much-needed peace!

Added a lil homage to Norman Rockwell with his rendition of a barbershop quartet!

Yes it’s Inktober! Though I’m also adding in prompts from @ur___mu with their comic book panel challenge. So both peaceful from them and contraption from the official prompts!

A little sketch video for the mid Inktober! ✍️✨

It’s my 8th year joining the challenge, and this time I decided to try the @ur___mu Inktober prompts alongside the official ones from @inktober . I’ll be doing a bit of travelling this month so I decided to it digitally.

The result? A little comic project that lets me have fun with both sets of prompts and see where the stories take me with my very own Peranakan OCs. Just as a refresher and to introduce them to my readers.

How’s your Inktober?

So why is Rose hiding?

Rose is beginning to suspect Mak Galah, that gangly auntie of theirs, is plotting her revenge by introducing her to the most horrid suitors imaginable. All because Bibik apparently stole her suitor! 😱

Ah, the sweet taste of revenge… served with a side of bad matchmaking and a generous helping of horrid gentlemen. Rose is NOT amused. Menjeling matanya!

Galah is a long stick / pole. The Peranakans are known for their most unflattering nama gelair or nicknames from Mak Busok to Nya Hitam! These days we probably call them nama glamor. So Mak Galah would probably fit in for a thin gangly auntie.

Yes it’s Inktober! Though I’m also adding in prompts from @ur___mu with their comic book panel challenge. So both revenge from them and gangly from the official prompts!

Battling the angst of matchmaking, dodging meddlesome aunties and clinging desperately to the freedom of bachelorhood. Marriage? Hooray… absolutely not! 😩💐

Basil has perfected the art of hiding from debutantes behind potted plants. 🌿 A most common undignified strategy really - until his sister Rose appears beside him, looking equally suspicious.

Find out what happens next!

Yes it’s Inktober! Though I’m also adding in prompts from @ur___mu with their comic book panel challenge. So both angst from them and hooray from the official prompts!

A sudden tropical downpour sends Basil running for shelter only to bump into someone also hiding from the rain. The raindrops fall in silver curtains around them, the world softened by mist and the scent of wet earth. For once, neither seems in a hurry to leave.

A bit of a teaser for my coming comic! Learn more about what happens next.

Yes it’s Inktober! Though I’m also adding in prompts from @ur___mu with their comic book panel challenge. So both romanticism from them and lady ( or lack thereof ) from the official prompts!

Basil is beginning to suspect that the new fellow has somehow mastered the art of being omnipresent. At the kopitiam? There he is. Out for a stroll? There he is again for a delivery. Down the wharves? Good heavens, there he is still.

His excuses seem spectacularly flimsy, delivered with the confidence of a man who has never once been questioned by a sane person.

‘I happened to be sending coffee.’
‘At three different places?’
‘Umm yes?’

Well maybe not that flimsy. Basil begins to wonder whether this is a perfectly ordinary coincidence or something far more surreal. Or maybe he’s the one who keeps looking out for the fellow 👀 Here, There & Everywhere.

Yes another quick homage to a painting I love by Gustave Courbet titled Le Désespéré (The Desperate Man ) Swipe to see the gorgeous original!

Yes it’s Inktober! Though I’m also adding in prompts from @ur___mu with their comic book panel challenge. So both Surrealism from them and Flimsy from the official prompts!
