The Practice # 038 - Bullet hits.
°
I'm a huge fan of action set pieces in film, TV, and animation. I wanted to practice bullet hit damage, so I created this car sequence in C4D. To get the Bullet hits to look right, I watched a bunch of films like Ghost in the Shell (1995), Heat, The Batman (car chase scene), Matrix Reloaded (highway scene) and Mission Impossible Fallout (Paris chase scene). I broke down any car hits frame by frame. I then made the bullet hits in Adobe Animate.
°
References and research are a huge part of design. It's the invisible part most people don't see, but it makes all the difference in my opinion. It will feel like a slog at first processing new information but understanding things at a fundamental level is very valuable.

The Practice # 037 - Character Animation. Scroll right for a breakdown.
°
Many thanks @elfanychan, who designed this lovely pugg character. Also, thanks @guijooorge for his excellent breakdown of a runcycle on Skillshare channel. I picked up a lot from him, and he really demonstrates the importance of a bouncing ball in animation.
°
I broke the pugg down into 3 circles. His head, body, and belly. I wanted to make sure the bounce felt right for the character's weight and height. Once I was happy with one, it was a matter of offsetting the belly and head bounces to achieve some follow through and overlap.
°
To give him more life, I gave him some secondary animation (tail, ears, and sweat). In the case of the ears in the tail, a nice thing to remember is that they are always reacting to the main animation, so they are slightly behind what is going on if that makes sense.

The Practice # 036 - Moving 3D traffic. Scroll right for a quick breakdown.
°
I took a single car as an example. I made this in C4D but the process is very similar in other 3D software (Blender, Maya etc).
1 - create a spline. The spline will act as the path you want your object to follow( in this case a car).
2 - With your vehicle selected, go to your C4D objects panel, right click > Animation Tags > Align to Spline
3 - In your attributes panel, in the tag menu, drop your spline layer into the Spline Path.
4 - below the Spline Path, you'll see the position percentage bar. With this you can now animate your vehicle along the path. You can also use a cloner to create multiple vehicles along the path.
°
Also a shoutout to @minhpham.design who has some excellent YouTube videos on C4D and he shows just what you can do with great lighting, even with the standard renderer. Thank you.

The Practice #035 - 3D lighting Redshift. Full credit to @effectatron here. The full tutorial for this can be found on his YouTube channel. He's almost at 20k subscribers, so feel free to subscribe to his channel.
°
When I'm studying a subject (in this case, 3D lighting), I normally try and do something of my own with it. But I had an insanely busy week, so it was lovely to just watch a tutorial and pick up a few extra tips from someone who really knows C4D and Redshift really well.

The Practice # 034 - 3D Lighting. Please scroll right for variations and breakdowns.
°
I wanted to improve upon my lighting with some study. I went back and studied the fundamentals properly. It's always key. I started with 3 point lighting as a jumping off point. I owe a huge amount of thanks to @eyedesyn and @schoolofmotion. I think almost everything I know about 3D lighting is thanks to EJ.
°
The first video is a behind the scenes of my first image.gping for a crime drama type feel. I tried to show where I positioned my keylight (main light), fill light and rim light. There are no coloured materials on the objects, so the colour is all coming from the lights. The blinds were placed in front of the keylight to create the blind shadows cast onto the scene.
°
The second video is of a Sketch and Toon type style, which you often see me use on my Practice videos. By adding a shadow pass and a glow light pass, I was able to add some shadows and glow highlights to hopefully make the scene pop more. I think I could've used a better colour palette to make the computer pop more and stand out from the background. I'll know next time.

The Practice # 033 - Drummer.
°
This is an animation I put together for my mate @brendrum_jones @h91drumschool for the fun of it. I saw the drum mocap animation on Mixamo and decided to put the scene together.

Huge thanks once again @olof_storm for the character model.

I had this image in my head, so I set out to match it as accurately as I saw it in my minds eye.

Colour palettes are just one of those things, at least to me, where you have to keep trying schemes and palettes until it fits. I used a lot of references of Iceland for this one as the Icelandic landscape is beautiful

The Practice # 030 - Rain.
°
When on holidays in the Canaries, I noticed people working 12 hours or more, 6 to 7 days a week in shops and businesses. At night, I would often see some of them waiting for a bus to take them home to the far side of the island. Business seemed slow in many of these places. It just stuck in my head. It might have reminded me of jobs I did when I was younger. Jobs were time barely seemed to move, and you were stuck with nothing to do.
°
I wanted to try and articulate this feeling I can't quite put into words. I guess this is my interpretation of that. I live in the west of Ireland, so I know all about rain. In fact, when I was making this, it rained the entire time. Plus, I love Blade Runner and the sense of isolation it evokes, so that crept in here too.
°
The 3D scene was created in C4D. The ramen stalls are free 3D assets that I found on CG trader. The character model was one created by @olof_storm that I got on his Patreon and rigged in Mixamo to get the movement. The rain (water splashes, puddle, and raindrops) were made in After Effects.
°
If you want to know how to make the rain, check out @olof_storm on YouTube, where he has a rain tutorial. Thank you Olof 🙏🙏.

The tree texture was drawn in Photoshop using a wacom tablet and then applied to a basic tree shape in C4D. Then the snow was composited in After Effects.
°
Quick backstory. Before I went full-time into motion design, I was a gigging musician, I would often play weddings and corporate events 2-3 days a week, and there was always lots of waiting around for the event to start. So it's where I learned to draw. I'd constantly practice pen and ink drawings (examples are here on my older Instagram posts).
°
My point is that it was always my intention to mix my drawings at some point with motion graphics to give it a more distinct feel. It has taken years to learn all of this stuff, so it's nice to finally start integrating it.

I want to be able to create atmosphere in environments, and I thought a sandstorm is great practice. I almost always see what I want visually in my head first, and then it's a case of experimenting with the software until I get it as close as possible to how It looks in minds eye.

The Practice # 027 - Wind Lines. Please scroll right for a breakdown.
°
Wind lines are a really nice way of adding some nice, subtle movement to a scene. I learned this method thanks @olof_storm on his Patreon page. I don't want to give away too much, but you can essentially create these lines using a tapered stroke and trim paths.
°
What isn't often spoken about in animation or motion graphics is the amount of problem solving involved and thinking on your feet. I was having an issue getting the perspective correct for the wind lines in After Effects.
°
I found the solution by jumping back into my scene in C4D, grabbing some cubes, moving them where I wanted the lines, and stretching them. Then I rendered out a frame as a guide so that I could lay down the wind lines on top.
°
It's a quick and dirty method, but thinking efficiently is often what's needed.
