Sky Is Open. This album turned 20 years old this year! It’s so hard to believe. I constantly find myself asking, where the heck does the time go? Sky Is Open is so close to my heart—so much so that I have two tattoos on my body to commemorate it.

Released in the summer of 2006, Donna created this beautiful masterpiece in the months leading up to the start of Madonna’s Confessions Tour. It was the first album of hers that I was fortunate enough to witness the growth of from beginning to end. I was even lucky enough to spend some days in the studio with Donna and the genius producer Mac Quayle. The magic I witnessed!

There was nothing groovier than watching Donna and Mac create these ethereal sounds and textured sonic landscapes. There was something almost otherworldly happening in that studio. You could feel that something special was taking shape.

The songs on Sky Is Open are deeply moving. They take you on a journey through love, loss, grief, redemption, inner strength and, ultimately, hope. Every time I listen to this album, I am transported somewhere else—a world where things felt a little simpler, where kindness seemed more abundant, and where there was still room to believe in something bigger than ourselves.

This album should have been nominated for a Grammy. In my opinion, it is one of the most beautifully produced albums of its time. But more importantly, it is one that has truly stood the test of time.

Twenty years later, I still hear something new in it. I still feel something when I listen. And I still get transported to that place.
“You’ll see the sky is open now, so you can fly away…”

And maybe that’s the magic of Sky Is Open.
The sky really is open.

Capo. My dear sweet buddy. As you’ve transitioned on to your next journey, there are a few things that I want you to know. From the moment we first met, it was pure love. From the moment you first met Maya, Chloe and Milo, it was pure love. Welcoming you into our family…well, it felt like you were the missing link. It was an honor to watch you throughout the years as your Mom @cuchira traveled near and far. I am so grateful to her for bringing you into my life. I never took a minute of it for granted. You were a constant reminder that a chill life is a good life. You were an amazing friend. Everyone that met you loved you. You have no idea how much you are going to be missed. Thank you for loving us. This feels like the end of an era. I know that there are three beautiful little souls waiting for you to cross over that bridge. Chloe and Milo are going to lose their shit when they see you (not sure about Maya 😀)! They will show you the ropes, shower you with love and keep you company.
