I haven’t been impressed with technology since AI.

Until my first @waymo ride in San Francisco…

…and watching the steering wheel turn with NOBODY in the driver’s seat?

What is his sorcery?! 🧙‍♀️

A combination of @lalabrigitte’s and Alex’s urging; and 3 Uber rides in a row where the driver had a nasty attitude and/or a nasty car - pushed us to try this.

And we’re so glad we did.

If you’ve never seen one, Waymo is basically an Uber with no Uber driver.

You request the car through the Waymo app. It pulls up.

You unlock it with your phone, buckle up, hit “Start Ride”… and the car does the rest.

But here’s what I didn’t fully understand until I actually rode in one:

This isn’t just a car following GPS.

Waymo uses cameras, radar and LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), which shoots millions of laser pulses around the vehicle to create a 3D picture of its surroundings.

The car can identify vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, traffic lights, construction, road hazards and movement around it in real time. It combines that with incredibly detailed maps and powerful computers onboard the vehicle.

The Jaguar I-PACE Waymos even have 29 cameras. 👀

And before somebody asks…

No, there isn’t secretly a guy in an office with a PlayStation controller driving us. 🎮

Waymo does have remote assistance available if the car encounters an unusual situation, but those people provide information or guidance. They do not remotely drive the vehicle.

The safety numbers were probably the most surprising thing I learned.

Through March 2026, Waymo had logged more than 220 MILLION fully autonomous miles.

According to Waymo’s latest safety analysis, compared with human drivers operating in the same areas, its vehicles experienced:

• 94% fewer crashes causing serious or fatal injuries
• 82% fewer crashes involving any reported injury
• 93% fewer injury crashes involving pedestrians

That doesn’t mean autonomous cars are perfect.

But they also don’t get sleepy, text while driving, road rage, drive drunk or decide they can “probably make that yellow light.” 😂

I love it. We’re fans.

I haven’t craved a restaurant in a long time

@saffysla in Los Angeles broke that streak (thanks @bon.jour.alice !!)

Fun fact: They are affiliated with @bestiadtla (which I love too) and @baveldtla.

Everything we had was delicious; but the main event was the main event!

I wish I captured more footage of the venue, because it was gorgeous, too; but I’ll be back, so stand by!

I don’t make good decisions during tournaments, all the time.

I am getting better, though (I need to drill the good in and the bad out, more).

But here’s a play I’m happy with, in retrospect.

1️⃣ I served deep to keep the opponent back.

2️⃣ My opponent returned the ball deep, though; that, and I wasn’t far back enough to feel confident about a third-shot drop.

So, I decided to drive to the corner to give him a bit of trouble...and my bet was right.

He popped it up and gave me time to run up to the kitchen.

3️⃣ You can tell that, when I ran up to the kitchen, I was tempted to take the ball out of the air - not because I wanted to steal the opponent’s time, which is usually the reason to do so. In this case, it was more because I was being impatient and excited.

But I hesitated and waited, which I’m glad I did. My footing wasn’t solid, and my return would’ve been sloppy.

I waited to get into a better position, and gave him a harder shot to return, and he popped it up again.

And I was already there to put it away with a hard angle.

Yay on patience.

I won that match, and it helped me place second at the @ipickle.us iPickle Pickletopia tournament at the Whittier Narrows.
