Keeping it simple.

A basic TR-8 beat, running through the Studer 169 — with just the hi-hats group pushed through a Joyo JF-21 Splinter distortion guitar pedal on the channel insert.

The low-level inserts on the 169 actually work surprisingly well with inexpensive guitar pedals, giving them plenty of room to add some character.

Sometimes you really don’t need much.

One of my favourite pieces of outboard for adding just the right amount of air, openness and clarity to a mix.

Very few of my recordings don’t benefit from some subtle adjustments on the Clariphonic MS — especially in the high-mid to high-frequency range.

Feels a little like opening a time capsule.

Due to lack of space — and a fair amount of module saturation — this one has been sitting unopened for more than four years.

When a similar module stopped working today and needs repair, it suddenly felt like the right time to finally unpack it…

..and rack it into the free slot.

Evolution of the Studio 2013-2026

It all started in 2013, in my apartment.

A year later, after a few problems with the neighbours, the studio moved into my father’s old film development darkroom — the Duka, as we always called it. It was only a short-term solution while I was clearing out and preparing the old garden house in my parents’ garden to become my new studio.

In late 2014, I finally moved from the Duka into the garden studio and built my first studio desk.

I put all the gear I had into place and slowly started building the setup.

I also started experimenting with acoustic treatment — mostly with whatever I could build or find at the time.

And slowly began to understand the modular system.

Which took me quite some time, as I was initially afraid to use it because I simply didn’t understand how it worked.

It took many sleepless nights, countless threads on ModularGrid, manuals and a lot of translating unfamiliar vocabulary to slowly piece together the bigger picture of synthesis.

What started as random experimentation and hoping for the right result gradually turned into a much deeper understanding of how to turn abstract ideas into audible sounds.

And eventually, all that theory became a practical tool for translating ideas in my head into music.

The first Meduka releases were made during this transition — Meduka 001 was produced in the apartment, while Meduka 002 was already made in the gardenhouse studio.

From 2015 onwards, the studio went through countless changes.

The acoustics were improved and the room was turned around 180°.

The setup evolved, and over the years I kept trying to make the space not only sound better, but also look better.

Year by year, the studio kept changing with the equipment, the workflow and my understanding of the space.

What started as a rather improvised garden shed slowly became something much more refined.
