I’ll never forget the year I landed my first retainer, which then turned into two, then three.It opened my eyes to what was possible, and it’s a huge driver behind why The Freelance Photographer exists.Before that, every project ended the same way: happy about the work, quietly stressed about what came next. Retainers quieted that noise. I wasn’t starting from zero every month anymore. I knew what was coming in, and I could plan around it.Getting there wasn’t luck. I realized you need proper systems in place to land that kind of work, and then support it once it’s yours.3 retainer clients at $3,500/mo is $126K a year. That’s a base you can build a business on.Retainers are the foundation. One-offs are the added revenue on top. That’s the model that finally made this sustainable for me, and it’s what we help other commercial photographers + videographers build too.Curious where you’re stuck.
