I just posted two long videos where I talk about music and art, so I’ll keep this caption short and just get to this fable I chose for the Early Man piece. I really do wonder how much of the connection between the song, art, and fable is obvious right away vs more subtle.

The Boy and the Truck
—
A boy lived with his family who owned an old pickup truck. “Never take the truck,” they warned him, “you’re too young,” but it made him want it all the much more. One day when everyone was gone, he took the truck, and he drove and drove until he had no idea where he was — finally stopping in a strange town. A merchant approached him, “That’s a fine truck, boy. I’ll give you fifty luples for it.” “No,” said the boy, though he’d never seen so much money. Another man came forward, “I’ll give you one hundred luples and a fine timepiece! Surely you’ll take it.” The boy hesitated — but shook his head. A wealthy family appeared, “We’ll give you one thousand luples, a large manor, and our beautiful daughter’s hand in marriage.” The boy stared at the lovely girl and felt very grown up. But then he thought about his family, the truck, and how he got lost. “That is very generous,” he thanked them, “but could you tell me how to get home?” by @pavelgitnikco

Since I have that triple art format going - where I’m posting a painting, a song, and a fable that I already lived with and feel capture something important - I also feel free now to post more in-progress or newer works and discuss more philosophy or process. Two posts ago I shared how I make music w a cool new instrument called Suno. Here I’m making a visual piece with another cool instrument — this one you probably heard of and use yourself. It’s 20 min or so and demystifies some of the controversy around AI art, authorship, artistry, and the role of people in a new world where computers can talk, paint, and even write essays about things they notice. // Btw — you can rewind or fast forward IG vids by dragging the little timeline on the bottom below the vid. by @pavelgitnikco

So this is the third triptych (art x song x fable) I’m posting and I’m super excited about it. I really have not had any desire to post on SM until I decided to do this format because otherwise it just felt like promotion or documentation or something else that’s boring and rehashing old thoughts for the sake of performance. And though I don’t mind having to perform — in fact, this is the whole point of art — I knew there was a way to do this that I would enjoy and find interesting and creative. So these pairings are their own art form now and it’s personally rewarding for me to make them, which I know would translate better than anything I could manufacture.

This caption is getting too long so I’m putting the fable in the first comment. // “The Boy and the Rock” by @pavelgitnikco

I have been really excited about making music like this. I’m gonna make more instrumental songs from that melody and write words and then post something cool later. // What I’m playing with in this video is Suno (and then Premiere). by @pavelgitnikco

So a lot of people know that I’ve been making mashup/remixes and doodles over the years and lately I’ve been playing with all the new AI art tools — and that has been super fun. And I think it is totally possible to make some great art with them, especially when the kernel is your own doodle like in this case or own melody like this song. I’ll definitely share more about my process but prob not in captions — I’ll just post vids and audio cause that’s how I find it easier to talk about stuff. // I do wanna continue sharing a fable with each art piece as well. Even though I’m not selling songs or fables, it’s 2/3 of what I make and I don’t mind writing it off as a marketing expense on the balance sheet :-) And even though I made all these as standalone, I am finding that the process of pairing them into these multimedia triptychs is way more fun and sustainable for me because I get to create something new with each of these posts and make new connections between all the feelings and ideas.

The Frog and the Potatoes
—
There once was an old frog who had been challenged by three young frogs to a jumping contest. “At sunrise tomorrow, we shall meet by this sack of potatoes and see who jumps the highest!” The old frog agreed and returned the next day, but the young frogs were nowhere to be found. The first slept too long, the second lost his way, and the third started chasing flies and forgot all about the contest. “Surely I can jump higher than these potatoes,” the old frog said and leapt into the air.

I really would love to write a normal caption here with some sort of update or explanation of how I made the art or music, but I really can’t get myself to do that right now 😂 // instead I wanna share this fable I wrote that relates to both of them and would be much more interesting:

The Chalice of Jamai
—

Three runners were tasked to retrieve the Holy Chalice of Jamai from the old temple. The road would be long, but water was scarce in the village and they were each given but two flasks full, one for the trip there and one for the trip home. The first runner did not reach but a third of the way to the temple and his first flask was dry. He turned back and reported his failure. The second runner reached more than half of the way before his first flask was out of water too. He too turned back, drinking from the second flask on the way home. The third runner took off with the wind at his heels. By the time he reached a third of the way, he had finished both his flasks. “Ah, here are those coconut trees that my uncle spoke of so long ago.” And he climbed and drank the coconut juice and filled his flasks. By the time he had run more than half of the way there, his flasks were empty again. “Oh, here are those trees beneath which the river runs.” And he knelt down and pricked the ground with a hefty reed and water sprang from the ground. And he drank to his fill and so did the flasks. When he reached the temple, he had one flask full and one drunk, and he drank the second whistling back along, the Chalice of Jamai with him. When he passed the river, he filled his flasks again, and once more by the coconut trees. By the time he reached the village, all had thought he had perished, but instead he brought both the chalice and the sweet taste of nectar on his lips. by @pavelgitnikco
