🥋 Meet the Team: Christopher Fisher
Black Belt | Co-Owner & Head Coach

Coach Chris began his Jiu Jitsu journey in 2008. Over the years he’s competed in countless tournaments (even stepping into amateur MMA for a time), earned his purple belt in 2012, met his wife Marie on the mats, moved across the Midwest, and started a family.

After a few years focused on family and career, Chris picked his Jiu Jitsu journey back up in 2018 here Downriver. Since then, he’s trained and competed at a high level, earning his Black Belt in late 2023 and now under Walter “Cascao” Vital through Matheus Veloso De Brito.

💪 Notable Achievements Include:
🥇🥇 Double gold at the first IBJJF Detroit Open (2021)
🥈🥈 Double silver at IBJJF Pans (Florida)
🥇 IBJJF Master Worlds Champion (2021)
🥇🥇 Double gold at IBJJF Austin Open (2022)
🥇 Gold + 🥉 Open Weight Bronze at IBJJF Chicago Open
🥉 Bronze at IBJJF Master Worlds (2022)
🥇 First place gold at the 2023 Arnold Classic
🥇🥇 Double gold Gi + 🥇🥇 Double gold No-Gi at IBJJF Atlanta Open (2023)
🥈🥈 Multiple podium finishes at IBJJF Chicago, Indianapolis & Detroit Opens (2024–2025)

Chris says:
“I’ve learned many of life’s lessons from Jiu Jitsu. It’s helped me overcome adversity, taught me confidence, and amplified my value of hard work and determination. Through this beautiful art I’ve learned that the only limitations are the ones you place on yourself.”

Jiu Jitsu is truly a Fisher family affair — Marie is also a high-level instructor, and their children train and enjoy their time on the mats as well.

🥋 Coach Chris’s goal:
“To give back what Jiu Jitsu gave me. See you on the mats 🤙”

IBJJF Detroit Open Recap June 13–14

What a weekend for Michigan Grappling Co.
On Saturday, @payittothegrind represented our team in the gi and was fortunate enough to bring home double🥇 🥇Competing is always a reminder that growth comes from putting yourself out there and testing your limits.
Sunday was all about our team stepping up and embracing the challenge. @cascaojiujitsu earned 2nd overall team in No Gi🤙
@nickcasas313 battled through a stacked Adult Blue Belt division, finishing 1-1 and gaining valuable experience.
@tannersmith1119 fought hard, went 1-1 in Adult Blue Belt, and earned 🥉 Bronze. Also gaining valuable experience.
@djchilders_ stepped onto the mats at M1 and brought home 🥈 Silver.
Kids Coach @cprawdzik89 challenged himself in M2 Blue Belt and earned 🥉 Bronze. Wanting to test himself again he signed up for the open but ended up without a bracket.
Coach Marie @mariefisher14 made weight ready to fight but unfortunately had no one in her division or open.
@payittothegrind decided to test myself in a younger age division, competing in Master 2. I had no one in my division but signed up for Open Weight, and earned 🥈 Silver after a hard-fought final that came down to a referee’s decision.
Medals are great, but they’re not what I’m most proud of. What makes me proud is the willingness to step onto the mat and find out who you are when things get difficult. Every person who competed this weekend showed courage, discipline, and the desire to grow.
We have one hell of a room at Michigan Grappling Co. A room where everyone genuinely wants everyone else to get better. No egos. No shortcuts. Just hard work, accountability, and teammates pushing one another toward their potential.

Win or lose, that’s what we’re building.
The future is bright. Back to work. 👊

Long post alert — what an amazing day.

I competed in my first BJJ tournament and came home with 3rd place, plus a gold medal in the Open division after nobody else signed up. I lost my first match on points and my second by submission, but honestly, I’ve never been more proud of myself.

What people see are the medals and smiles. What they don’t see are the countless hours on the mats, the fear of stepping out there, the anxiety leading up to today, the injuries, rehab, and losing 40 pounds preparing for this moment.

I’ve wanted to do this for so long, but mentally I couldn’t get there. Today I finally did — and I didn’t quit on myself.

This experience showed me I belong in this sport. I know the standard now, and I know I’m capable of winning. Most importantly, I had an absolute blast doing it.

To my wife, Alyssa — I truly don’t do this without you. You carried me mentally all week and got me through today with your love, support, reassurance, and belief in me. I’m a better man because of you.

To my son Eli — your words stayed with me the entire day: “If you lose, it’s a game. If you win, it’s a game. Either way, I love you.”

And to Marie Fisher and Christopher Fisher — thank you for believing in me, pushing me past my limits, and always reminding me that I was ready. You’re more than coaches to us — you’re family. We love you.

At the end of the day, I had three goals:
• Don’t get injured
• Don’t quit on myself
• Bring home two medals to share with my son

I accomplished all three.

I’ll be back — and way better next time. by @payittothegrind

When I look around the mats, I can’t help but feel proud of how far Michigan Grappling Co. has come in such a short time.

What makes this place special isn’t just medals, promotions, or competition results. It’s the people. Every day, we show up and help each other get better. We push one another, challenge one another, and support one another through the highs and lows.

Some days we’re motivated. Some days we’re tired. Some days life is heavy. But we keep showing up. We keep doing the work. Through teamwork, discipline, and consistency, we continue to grow—not just as grapplers, but as people.

The culture we’re building is one where everyone contributes. Everyone learns. Everyone teaches. Everyone gets better.

Success isn’t built in the moments when things are easy. It’s built in the early mornings, the late nights, the hard rounds, and the decision to keep moving forward when you’d rather quit.

Thank you to every student, coach, parent, and teammate who has helped build this team. The journey is just getting started, and I couldn’t be more excited for what’s ahead.

Happy Mother’s Day to my wife @mariefisher14 — the heart of our family and the person who gives everything for the people she loves.

There aren’t enough words to fully explain what you mean to us. The love, patience, strength, and sacrifice you pour into our children every single day never goes unnoticed. You make our house feel like home, our family feel loved, and our lives better in more ways than I could ever put into words.

I know I don’t always say it enough, and I know I’m far from perfect, but I hope you know how deeply appreciated and loved you truly are. Watching you be a mother is one of the greatest blessings of my life.
Thank you for everything , every hug, every lesson, every moment you put us before yourself. Our children are growing up with an incredible example of love because of you.

We are beyond lucky to have you.
I am beyond lucky to have you.
Happy Mother’s Day babe 😘 ❤️ by @payittothegrind
