Six months ago today, IF PETS WROTE POEMS unleashed its poetic parodies! 🐾

I’m so proud of how it’s engaging readers of all ages by reimagining poems originally written by Edgar Allan Poe, Benjamin Franklin, Emily, Dickinson, and many more It even got a starred review from School Library Journal! ⭐️

This picture book poetry collection was written by me, illustrated by Sandie Sonke and published by Gnome Road. I love sharing poetry with kids, and I say adults can appreciate these poetic reimaginings, too. Ask for it at your library or wherever you buy books.📚

Happy Book Birthday 🎂 to PB Spree Member and illustrator Neha Rawat’s beautiful and delightful debut!

In her debut as author-illustrator, Neha Rawat offers a story joyfully rooted in Indian traditional culture, sibling love, and multidimensional girlhood.

Gauri and her sister, Nandini, are opposites, like sunshine and shade. Gauri is rough and tumble, fond of soccer and skateboarding. Nandini is stylish, gentle, and poised. But one day, while her sister practices Bharatanatyam, Gauri hears Nandini’s ghungroos jingling. Enchanted by the tinkling ankle bells, Gauri must try the dance for herself. As her sister teaches her rhythm, graceful hand movements, and elegant poses, Gauri stomps along . . . but her ghungroos sound jittery and offbeat, her mudra isn’t pretty, and she can’t stay balanced. Soon she despairs of ever dancing as beautifully as her sister. Will Gauri have to give up on her dreams of exploring her more graceful side? Featuring an author’s note about Indian classical dance, this playful picture book debut invites readers to break out of their prescribed roles and experience the joys of working hard on something new.

Rhythmic language, onomatopoeia, and energetic illustrations combine to make this title worthy of a place in most collections, especially those amplifying and celebrating South Asian heritage.

Happy Book Birthday 🎂 Trucks, Boots, and Bells! This beautiful lyrical book is written by PBSpree member @maryecronin and illustrator @aaronmarin_illustrator

Calling all kids who are fascinated by firefighting! You will love these eighteen poems, exciting pictures, and fun facts!

Bells ring out a code / Time to hit the road / Firefighters answering the call!

In eighteen poems and a collection of fun facts, firefighters put on their helmets, pull on their boots, and race through the city! With their hoses, axes, and bright red blazes, they’re ready to battle blazes.

The daughter of a firefighter, Mary E. Cronin writes with great love and respect as she shares behind-the-scenes details, along with drama and pathos. Aaron Marin brings fresh perspective and childlike imagination to every page, while underscoring the dignity and bravery of a noble profession.

The ballads, haikus, and other poems in this book make it the perfect introduction to many forms of poetry. Poems include “Trucks, Boots, and Bells,” “Pole Slider,” “Helmet,” “We’re Engine 71,” “Attack Hose,” “Fierce Battle,” Mother Firehouse,” and more.

“The bustling activities of the urban firehouse and on the fire scene come to life with Cronin’s energetic verse. Poems are short, descriptive, and informational, all with deliberate rhyme and prosody. The narrative captures the many fascinating moving pieces of fighting a fire that will delight young rescue fans. . . . Marin’s folk-style art is boldly colored, dynamic, and textured. . . . These exciting, informational poems with action-packed illustrations have broad appeal. A must-purchase for poetry collections.”

Happy Book Birthday to PB Spree Member and illustrator Neha Rawat!

A hilarious and wholly original Thanksgiving book, destined to become a holiday classic!

Run, run, run as fast as you can.
You won't catch me for your roasting pan!

When a turkey is caught in a trap on Thanksgiving morning, he knows it can only mean one thing: a one-way trip to the dinner table. But this particular turkey won't give up without a fight, so he takes to the streets in a daring escape! Tailed by a small group of pursuers, he's determined to make it out of Thanksgiving Day without catching sight of a turkey baster.

But it's possible that not is all that it seems. Maybe the group chasing him do not want to enjoy him as part of their Thanksgiving meal; maybe they have something else in mind instead . . .

Written in witty, bouncing rhyme by Alayne Kay Christian and brought to life with lush, autumnal art by Neha Rawat, Turkey on the Run! is bound to become a classic that young readers will beg to read again and again.

On this first day of Autumn, Mr. Ernie recommends FALL: A Seasons Story which is is a glorious celebration of the season. The lyrical text welcomes the reader into a cozy forest world where woodland animals work together to help an exhausted Monarch butterfly on its southward migration. The glowing illustrations of nature are as cozy as a warm, soft blanket. The book ends acknowledging that goodbyes are hard but “Even when you’re miles apart, Friends are always in your heart.”

This is a wonderful to book to welcome the fall and is a beautiful addition to the Solstice & Seasons Series written by Kelsey Gross and illustrated by Renata Liwska.

In this high-tech spin on the classic nursery rhyme, Mags MacDonald gets more than she bargained for

With her grandpa on a trip out of town, Mags Macdonald is left in charge of the farm. And on that farm, she has a whole lot of work to do! Armed with her to-do list, Mags employs some high-tech tools to help her get the job done.

But everything goes wrong―she loses control of her turbo jetpack hose, her voice-activated giant robotic octopus has a mind of its own, and her high-speed conveyor belts go haywire! And, to top it all off, the animals don’t want to eat the pizza Mags ordered for them! Then, just when she is completely overwhelmed, Mags’s friends show up to help tidy the farm and get her tech under control.

This fractured nursery rhyme will have readers laughing out loud and singing along as they follow a plucky, maker-kid protagonist use creative problem solving, make some mistakes, and persevere to learn from them. by @pbspree

It was a fun night, thanks to California Indie Booksellers and an inkwell of writers. The wine flowed. The desserts were splendiferous. And I want to read ALL of the books featured as finalists. Congrats to Kadir Nelson whose book, Basketball, took home the Golden Poppy for children’s nonfiction. And congrats to all of the winners and finalists. So many fantastic books! And, oh, did I mention the desserts?🍨 I think the chocolate mousse and espresso mousse were my faves! Back home now, and ready to get back to the writing! I wrote some quick notes on the plane that may make it into my new MG novel…thank you thank you to CALIBA for selecting The Ocean’s Heart, illustrated by Khoa Le—wish she could have been there!) as a finalist! (It was nice to get dressed up and hang out with other book lovers! )

HAPPY BOOK BIRTHDAY TO PB SPREE MEMBERS KARI ANN GONZALEZ AND BONNIE KELSO!

From the author of the How To Hatch series and the award-winning illustrator behind Dexter, Nudi Gill, In a Cave, and the Childhood Milestones series comes a unique story that combines counting, addition, and the Ten Billy Goats Gruff in a mathematical fairy tale that will delight budding readers and mathematicians alike.

An everyday trek up the mountain becomes the perfect opportunity for a young goatherding mathematician to teach his goats a little maa-th. Trying to keep ten goats together proves to be a challenge, but mathematics makes everything easier, especially when your goats prove to be good at addition…and staying on track. The goats and their goatherd cross rivers, climb cliffs, and meet unexpected friends, all while playing with numbers in a fun, interactive way. With illustrations that cleverly depict number lines and ten frames, this picture book is sure to have young readers counting along.

A great read-aloud for classrooms, libraries, and homeschooling, this book includes early addition concepts including number lines, counting up, number bonds and grouping.
