A new church-wide series promises to tackle “Why ‘Presbyterian’ will never be a political party.” The free series will be facilitated by the current Co-Moderators of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the Rev. Marta Pumroy-Cordero and the Rev. Dr. Kris Schondelmeyer, who said the key question for the series is not which political party is Presbyterian, but “how does being Presbyterian shape the way we participate in public life?”

The series is open to all, including church leaders, clergy, staff, mid council leaders, and congregation members, and will take place over Zoom at 1 p.m. (EDT) on Friday, Oct. 2, Friday, Oct. 16, and Friday, Oct. 30. Each session will have a different focus and feature guests from denominational leadership. Participants can register for each online session individually (registration links in comments).

“Gun violence is a spiritual issue. It is a spiritual crisis in this country."

The Rev. Margery Rossi, the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship’s Minister for Gun Violence Prevention, spoke at the third annual James Atwood Institute for Congregational Courage last week, reasserting the church’s role in gun-violence prevention. In this video, Rossi talks about the origins of the Atwood Institute and how it provides an opportunity to live out our faith.

“There must be no competition among you, no conceit, but everybody is to be humble: value others over yourselves, each of you thinking of the interests of others before your own.”

Faith leaders—whether clergy or lay leaders—are often the first persons someone turns to in a moment of crisis. Extreme Risk Protection Orders (often called “red flag laws”) offer a way to help protect a congregant — or their loved ones — during a dangerous moment involving firearms, but many clergy have never been introduced to how they work.

That’s why we have released a new guide with the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions. Extreme Risk Protection Orders: A Clergy Resource Guide, is designed to help faith leaders recognize warning signs and understand how to connect congregants with life-saving intervention resources.

Join our upcoming webinar to learn how your role in the community can help prevent a warning sign from becoming a tragedy.

Ahead of Friday's observance of Native American Day, the Rev. Irvin Porter delivered a sermon during last week's online Chapel Service titled “Listening to Voices Long Silenced,” using Ephesians 4:1-6 and 14-16 as his preaching texts. Read more about the service at the link in our bio @pcusa.

On the right, a quote from Porter reads: “Clearly, we need to do more to build a more inclusive, just and merciful nation. But the process begins by listening to those who haven’t been and are still not welcome to the table.” by @pcusa

“…Students from 24 countries at Union Theological Seminary here read the Bible, each in his own tongue.” This Religious News Service photo was captured in 1950. Whether these students are at the beginning or end of pursuing their advanced theological degrees is not known—but that they traveled to New York City in order to attend Union Theological Seminary is evidence of their eagerness for ministry, and the worldwide influence of the school.

Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York was established in 1836, when nine Presbyterian ministers came together to create an urban seminary in the midst of the burgeoning and blossoming city. These 24 students, once each receives their Master of Divinity, are set to return to their home countries to pursue their ministerial careers.

Today the PC(USA) honors Theological Education/Seminaries Sunday. If you have an educator or seminary you'd like to honor on this day, we invite you to share with us in the comments.
