Last week was Language Week! 🗣️📚🇩🇴

Language is a huge part of preparing for Peace Corps service. Before volunteers arrive in their communities, they spend extensive time learning Spanish and developing the language skills they’ll need to communicate, connect, and participate in daily life. And the learning doesn’t stop after training, volunteers continue building their Spanish throughout their service as they learn new vocabulary, expressions, and, of course, Dominican Spanish!

For Language Week, we’re celebrating some of the words that have become part of our everyday lives in the Dominican Republic from guagua to platano. 🇩🇴🍌

A special thank you to all of our incredible Language Facilitators! ❤️ Your patience, encouragement, creativity, and dedication help prepare volunteers for service and give us the tools and confidence to communicate and build meaningful relationships in our communities.

Swipe through the alphabet and celebrate a little bit of Dominican Spanish with us! ✨ by @peacecorpsdr

As summer in the DR has come to an end, we want to take a moment to highlight volunteer-led initiatives that took place. Through literacy camps, sports camps, and murals our Volunteers found ways to stay involved in their communities outside of the school setting 🔆!

3 months of service officially in the books! 🎉✨

Our newest cohort reached their first major milestone, which means it was time to reconnect for their In-Service Training (IST)!

Even after swearing in, the learning never stops. Volunteers continue to sharpen their skills and level up their professional development. The training was packed with community diagnostics, reflection activities, and project monitoring tools to prep them for the upcoming school year.

Congrats, 26-01! We can't wait to see what you all achieve next! 📚💪 by @peacecorpsdr

¡Sigue bailando! 🇩🇴💃🏽 Summer is the perfect time for Peace Corps Volunteers to launch secondary projects. As summer is ending, we would like to share a recap of Keanna and Carly’s 4-day Dance Camp!
While Merengue is the official national dance of the DR, the camp focused on exploring three other major rhythms with the community:
- Salsa: A high-energy, classic Caribbean favorite focused on fluid turns, syncopated rhythms, and intricate partner work.
- Bachata: A global favorite born right here in the rural DR, famous for its soulful guitars and signature 4-step footwork.
- Dembow: The modern, high-energy sound of the Dominican streets driven by fast, urban rhythms and sharp, low-to-the-ground movements.
Huge thanks to all the dancers who brought their energy to camp! 🌴✨

Peace Corps Volunteer Leader, Hannah, shows us a day in her life.

Peace Corps Volunteer Leaders bridge the gap between staff and volunteers, ensuring that Volunteers are supported by Staff, and that Staff are more informed about Volunteer issues.

Hannah gives us a glimpse into what a site-visit travel day looks like in the Dominican Republic! by @peacecorpsdr

School might be out in the DR, but at Summer Coco, our Volunteers spent a day growing, learning, and celebrating their service. At this Volunteer led, Volunteer funded conference, Volunteers partook in a range of activities including yoga, post-service interview tips, embassy work information sessions and an introduction to Dominican urban music by rapper Beethoven Villaman (brother of our very own @danielvillaamparo), PCDR’s Summer Coco 2026 offered fellowship and fun for Volunteers both new and experienced. Thank you to all who participated and facilitated this year’s event! See you next summer 🏖️
