Some mothers raise us. Some welcome us in.

Health Volunteer Joshua started spending afternoons with his neighbour, grandmother (Agogo) whose laughter you could hear before you reached her home. She taught him to weave ‘mkeka’ mats, and somewhere between sorting reeds and sharing quiet conversation, her family became his own. He now calls her Agogo, a name that reflects the bond they built as if it existed forever.

Happy Mother's Day to every mother and grandmother who opens her home and makes us family.

Health Volunteer Lucy, and her counterpart Alexander, have partnered with HIV support groups in their community to establish a beekeeping venture. Through hands-on training in bee biology, apiary care and honey harvesting, members are building skills to boost their incomes, support themselves and meet their nutritional goals.

Watch them share the story behind the hives.

As we continue to celebrate Peace Corps Language Week, we spotlight our Education Volunteers who have helped strengthen English language learning in Malawi, building bridges of intercultural understanding and opening doors of opportunity. Many Malawians can trace their educational foundation to a Peace Corps Volunteer’s classroom.

As we reflect on this impact, we invite you to share: How has a Peace Corps Education Volunteer influenced your life?

In celebration of Peace Corps Language Week, Education Volunteer Gage shares his favourite Chichewa phrase: “Kuseli kwa mavuto, kuli mtendere.” For him, it’s a reminder of resilience, hope, and the deep wisdom found in Malawi’s local languages. Learning Chichewa helps Volunteers build meaningful connections with Malawi and its people. Language is connection. Language opens doors.

What Chichewa phrase resonates most deeply with you?
