“Don’t compromise what’s gold,
for the soul you never sold.”

Says a lot. And there’s more.

For me, Esthero’s ‘Breath From Another’ (April 28, 1998, WORK) resonates with the spirit of an artist that knows who she is, her worth, her growth and purpose.

It encapsulates personal narratives, cinematic landscapes of the psyche, intimacy, sensuality, sadness, resistance, confidence, reflection, contemplation, uncertainty, certainty, intuition.

Grounded in jazz, hip-hop, soul, folk, bold breakbeat, scratchy wax, groove, emotion, flow, rawness.

*Even more so : how place informs and shapes passion, purpose and creative process*

This proud Torontonian (me) would be nothing without this album. Esthero herself has said that this album would be nothing without the city it was birthed and nurtured in. To this day.

For our final instalment of @on.rcrd’s KIKU September edition on Trip Hop, we bring one of our brightest and most influential artists to @915dupont for an immersion into this special album.

In the next slides, you’ll get a throwback from my time as a guest curator for @the204designcollective’s Video Bar series - an IG livestream in the pandemic analyzing media and culture from an architecture and design lens.

Of course “That Girl” was one of 13 tracks/ videos I chose that showcased Toronto scenes in vibrant ways.

Circa April 18, 2021 (check this - right around the corner from the original album release date).
