kaikōura📍 a few different places in one post this time :) kaikōura📍 seal colony walk! 🦭 christchurch📍 old campus buildings of canterbury college. most of the old campus has been repurposed for other businesses and things, and we got to have our classes in some of the old classrooms! christchurch📍 marae visit! a marae is a sacred place for community and social gathering in Māori culture. this picture was taken in the marae’s dining hall, where they have this silly cat named manic :) christchurch📍 international antarctic centre: they have a “storm room” where you can experience what it would feel like to be in a storm in antarctica 🥶 castle hill📍 probably my favorite part of this whole trip was having free time to just explore and climb rocks at castle hill castle hill📍 fun fact: castle hill was the filming location for the final battle in the chronicles of narnia: the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe arthur’s pass📍 hiked up to see a waterfall! arthur’s pass📍 lake tekapo📍 skipped some rocks mt cook📍 we hiked as close as we could get to the base of mt cook, but sadly parts of the trail are closed. technically mt cook is next to the mountain in the background, and behind the mountain in the foreground mt cook📍 mt cook is NZ’s tallest peak. this picture is of a memorial for the many people who have died trying to climb mt cook middle of nowhere📍 dunedin📍 matched w sahasra for our first day in dunedin :)) dunedin📍 dunedin📍 spent some free time exploring a nearby rocky beach dunedin📍 dunedin📍 dunedin📍 went to NZ’s only castle: Larnach Castle (it was really more of a castle-shaped mansion…but still really cool and had some amazing views from the top!) dunedin📍 most seasick i’ve ever been in my life :/ but saw some seals!!! wait or are they sea lions? by @pearlizabeth_

wellington📍 wellington was my favorite place we stayed in NZ :) — zealandia: a wildlife refuge that restores a little valley in wellington as closely as possible to what the ecosystem was like before humans arrived in NZ wellington📍 in zealandia we saw 5 kiwi birds among other endangered birds, reptiles, and insects wellington📍 Old St. Paul’s wellington📍 most of wellington’s older buildings have been torn down so newer ones could be built, but protests saved this old church from demolition wellington📍 farmer’s market! wellington📍 …i’ve discovered that i don’t like matcha 💀 wellington📍 “It’s true you can’t live here by chance, you have to do and be, not simply watch or even describe. This is the city of action, the world headquarters of the verb -“ wellington📍 the harbor wellington📍 wētā workshop: a creative studio and special effects house based in wellington. they’re famous for designing and building creatures, miniatures, props, armor, etc. for movies like the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Avatar movies, some of the Marvel movies, etc. wellington📍 we got to tour NZ’s parliament building, which is nicknamed “the beehive” for its weird shape wellington📍 also got to tour Katherine Mansfield’s birthplace. she is a very famous NZ author, and we read some of her short stories in the literature class i took while in NZ wellington📍 cable car 🚠 wellington📍 the view from the top of the cable car wellington📍 went to a museum exhibit about gallipoli: the gallipoli campaign during wwi was a major defeat for new zealand and allied forces. since NZ was such a small country at the time, nearly everybody knew someone who died or was wounded wellington📍 wellington📍 ferry from the north island to the south island wellington📍 loved the ferry ride <3 wellington📍 dolphins!!!!! 🐬 by @pearlizabeth_
