Thank you for the personal tour of this must see exhibition @karaw_toe! ❤️

I loved your kōrero about the history of bringing this beautiful exhibition together with Nigel Borell & the team, and hearing about the incredible histories of the taonga on display. It was so beautiful listening to you and feeling the mauri of the taonga present. I loved the touches of contemporary mahi toi throughout too. @te_rongo_kirkwood, my heart! Exsquisite e hoa! ♥️My whole body tingled walking through this space particularly upon meeting Te Rā. That first encounter is a feeling I’ll never forget. The stirring in my puku and heart was indescribable.

When you told me that the hoe on display were unprovenanced.

(Unprovenanced means an item has missing, incomplete, or lost records about where it was discovered or how it was acquired). I stood there staring at them in awe, I started to think about how much this reminded me of myself, my siblings and of other Māori who don’t or didn’t know their whakapapa.

But being unprovenanced doesn’t mean we don’t belong. We were lost somewhere on the way…and just like those hoe, we are no less important because parts of our history are missing.

Whether our whakapapa is fully known or whether there are gaps, whether we know exactly where we come from or we’re still searching, we can still pick up a hoe, get into the waka and help paddle down the awa. It can only strengthen our bond as Māori descendants.

Ngā mihi Kara, for not only sharing the exhibition, kai & kōrero with me, but for giving me something to think about long after I left…and that was just the tip of the iceberg.

I had to share this. How many of you have picked up 007 when getting a blood test?! So, there I was, waiting my turn and there were 3 elderly men in front of me, no one smiling except me because I had just sent a photo of it to our family chat…Anyway by the time it was my turn the people in the room changed and there happened to be 4 elderly ladies in the room. The grumpy Phlebotomist yells out “number 7!” and I was like…ummm don’t you mean double O7? While showing everyone my card like a magician 🫣😂…I kid you not, every single person in the room laughed, even the grumpy Phlebotomist. I received some sad news the other day. My painting ‘Ko wai au_Who am I?’ was thrown out a few years ago. It was heartbreaking to hear but I am thankful I found images of it. I began this series in 1998 when I became hapū (pregnant) with my daughter Alexandra as I was so desperate to know who I was so I was able to tell her who she was. This is a raw and personal series but we make art to understand the world, to connect to others and as a way to heal from our past and present, so they needed to be created in this form, at this time.

This painting was exhibited in the Rotorua museum many years ago. I borrowed the composition from Picasso’s ‘Les desmoiselle d’Avignon’ as I was obsessed and curious about this work and Picasso. ‘Ko wai au_Who am I’ talks about particular stages of my life, as a child/young adolescent, raised by my English father, a teenager to young adult, becoming hapu at 24 years old and becoming a māmā/mother 15 days shy of 25. Oh the responsibilities! Being naked portrays that rawness and openness and honesty of oneself.

The other painting ‘Self Portrait: Ko wai au_Who am I’ thankfully still exists and is currently part of a small ‘Wāhine’ exhibition at the Pah, upstairs which state ‘Untitled’ as it was back then. Both paintings include geysers in them as a metaphor for the inner turmoil and because I am from Rotorua. At the time, even though I was married I kept my maiden name for my paintings but once I started studying at Elam I changed it to my married name Larkin as it felt right to do so. One of the most liberating series I have created is my ‘You are Here’ series 2024 - present. It made me realise I was always where I needed to be. Seeing the light @hinabeaming!

Well…the final day of ‘Silent Kōrero’ is here. 😭I hope to see some peeps at 3-4pm. Yesterday was a lovely experience.

I would like to thank with all my heart, @anitatotha ,Nicholas Butler, @nvmanthel and the rest of the @theartshousetrust team for your support and trust. I have really enjoyed working with you and have felt a lot of aroha! Also thanks to @tworoomsgallery for your support, particularly Jenny Todd who has been a mentor to me.

Ka nui te mihi to Kaumatua Tautoko Witika, kaumātua of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei for blessing the Pah and my mahi, to my friends, whānau, collegues and visitors to the Pah for sharing this space with me. This experience has been absolutely incredible!...from the first meeting with Anita and Nicholas, viewing the floorplan of the Pah, install, floortalk with the wonderful @sueg123, the drawing workshop with the amazing Nicki Cryer and all the beautiful interactions with the whole team.

Shout out to Don Abbott & William Dart @artnewzealand for including ‘Silent Kōrero’ in the latest Art New Zealand, I love how you champion NZ creatives!…and of course the formidable Dina Jezdic @ms.interpretedd for your creative contribution! I wanted to write this post in my own words but I am so grateful that your eloquent description is in print!

Please excuse the 20 images but I wanted to share this exhibition which is very special to me, with those who live overseas or just couldn’t make it. Also thank you to my talented and very beautiful cuzzy, @whitihereaka, I love you immensely!

Mōrena beautiful people,
I’ll be at Pah homestead from 2-3pm today and 3-4pm tomorrow. Love to see you if you’re near the hood. I also added a little gem I found the other day. I’ve been a bit of a mess in the last year particularly… possibly all my life! 😂 but I have to keep reminding myself that ‘my’ people don’t judge me, they just love me for who I am, even when I’m in the midst of perimenopause/menipause and struggling with past and present woes.
