What makes Vikram Gokhale’s performance in Natsamrat extraordinary is that Rambhau is a relatively minor character on paper. Yet Gokhale transforms him into something far greater, Appa Belwalkar’s conscience in human form.

And this resonates deeply because Natsamrat draws heavily from Shakespeare’s King Lear, Manjrekar borrowed one of the play’s most fascinating dynamics, the Fool. Much like the Fool who alone could speak uncomfortable truths to the King, Rambhau becomes the one man who stands before Appa not as a subordinate, but as a mirror.

Appa is a towering personality, he's theatrical, proud and emotionally overwhelming. The film needed someone equally formidable to challenge him. Gokhale brought that presence with such raw honesty that in several moments, he doesn’t merely stand alongside Nana Patekar, he consumes the scene entirely. Yet it never feels like competition. It feels like two giants surrendering to emotional truth.

The film’s most devastating moment comes when Appa visits Rambhau after years apart and witnesses what life has wrought upon his closest friend. The scene transcends sympathy and becomes a reckoning. Gokhale doesn’t perform grief theatrically. He simply exists in the pain, through exhausted silences, wounded eyes and bitterness buried beneath affection. When Rambhau finally speaks, it feels less like dialogue and more like years of abandonment demanding answers. For those few breathtaking minutes, Appa, a man who has spent his life performing before the world, is forced to sit quietly and listen. Nana Patekar’s restraint here is equally masterful. His silence, guilt and helplessness allow Gokhale’s devastation to land even harder.

That’s what great actors do. They don’t overpower each other. They elevate each other.

Directed by Mahesh Manjrekar, Natsamrat remains one of Marathi cinema’s greatest tragedies. This scene alone stands as a masterclass in acting, a haunting reflection on friendship, ego, regret and the unbearable cost of absence.

A few months back, while reading Natsamrat, I stumbled upon a letter by Dr. Shriram Lagoo published in the last few pages of the book. In it, he expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to play Appasaheb Belvalkar. He was the first actor to bring this character to life. What stayed with me was his account of a fellow actor’s death backstage during the very first show. A heartbreaking beginning to a play that would later be revered by audiences and critics alike.

Since then, I have often thought about what it must take to inhabit Appasaheb night after night. To return to his loneliness, his losses, his pride and his heartbreak, and make an audience feel them afresh. The stories surrounding the veterans who played him have only deepened that thought. We cannot know what toll a role takes on a person, but the emotional demands of this one are difficult to overlook. Such was the power of Kusumagraj’s writing, and the commitment of the actors who gave it life.

Nana brought that world to the screen. And today, listening to the monologue that accompanies the film’s closing credits, I hear it differently. Within the story, Appasaheb is gone, yet his voice remains. With Nana’s passing, those words feel like a farewell reaching us through a character he once inhabited.

A lone figure beneath a spotlight. A familiar voice. Words recorded for a film, now holding a grief beyond it.

Today, that performance gives us words for a goodbye we weren’t ready to say.

Nana, thank you for giving so much of yourself to the stories we carry with us. We will keep returning to your voice, and finding something of you there.

भावपूर्ण श्रध्दांजली 🎭

When you miss a show, you don't really miss the show. You miss the life around it.

When you revisit an old show, your brain doesn’t just recall the episodes, it reconstructs an entire world that no longer exists in quite the same way. That’s perhaps why an old TV show can evoke emotions far stronger than a much “better” recent one. It carries the emotional weight of an entire chapter of your life.

That’s what’s fascinating about nostalgia. It isn’t just about the show, but often about the life we were living when we watched it. And that’s exactly what Shriyut Gangadhar Tipre does. It makes you feel something far stronger than nostalgia.

If you sit with that feeling long enough, you realize you don’t miss the show. You miss the evenings it belonged to.

You miss a house that sounded different. The familiar voices around you. The clinking of cups from the kitchen. The homework waiting on the table.

The show was never just a story on a screen. It was the background music to a life that was quietly unfolding, one ordinary evening at a time.

And I think that’s why Shriyut Gangadhar Tipre continues to hold such a special place in so many hearts. It wasn’t trying to be extraordinary. It simply reflected ordinary life with honesty, and in doing so, it became extraordinary.

Perhaps the most poignant part is this: when we were living those evenings, they felt completely ordinary. None of us knew we were in what would later become “the good old days.”

That’s what gives nostalgia its quiet ache.

Like I said, when you miss a show, you don’t really miss the show. You miss the life around it.

What makes this scene so powerful is that it isn't simple ignorance or confusion, instead, there's a strange almost unsettling state of denial. The mind knows what the heart cannot bear to admit.

Kaveri is the last remaining constant in Appa's life. The only person who continues to love him without reservation. The moment she dies, Appa is left completely alone. Accepting her death would mean accepting the total collapse of his world.

Nana Patekar plays the scene with remarkable restraint. Rather than immediately breaking down, he hovers between the reality and refusal. His words and behaviour suggest a man trying to postpone the truth for just a few moments longer. The audience watches him gradually realise what has happened, even as he desperately clings to the illusion that Kaveri is still there.

The scene also echoes one of the central themes of Natsamrat: Appa spent his life inhabiting fictional worlds on stage. Throughout the film, the boundary between performance and reality becomes increasingly blurred. After Kaveri's death, that boundary almost disappears. He retreats into language, memory, and imagination because reality has become unbearable.

In a way, the tragedy isn't that Appa doesn't know Kaveri is gone. It's that he knows, and yet cannot bring himself to live in a world where she is gone.

That's why this scene feels so gut-wrenching. It's not merely grief, no. It's the brief, painful interval between loss occuring and the soul finding the strength to acknowledge it.
