“Climbing Like It’s 1979!”:In the late 70s and early 80s, Chris Jones, Alan Watts, and Bill Ramsey were a climbing crew destined to be one of the strongest in the United States. But they were young and didn’t know that yet, and they were climbing every week at a small, urban crag in Eugene, Oregon called The Columns. My old friend Kenny Cox died at 31, years ago now, but some ghosts don’t leave us, and I still see him everywhere, each may as the flowers bloom across the city, or biking through downtown, or crossing the river to the island, Kenny’s thick shoulders and that way he’d put his head down whenever he started to smile.I was his only high school and college teammate, I helped recruit him to wrestle with me at the University of Oregon, but I wasn’t his best friend, and I only wish now that I had prioritized him more while he was still with us.We met for coffee to talk about survival techniques the day before his final adventure, and I’m grateful for that time, that moment when he was still healthy and strong, still swimming wild water, and laughing about free food he’d just found in the Dominoes dumpster.Kenny won 5 junior national titles and 10 Oregon championships, and he was named the National Wrestler Of The Year, but he was SO MUCH more than a wrestler, and that’s why I’m grateful to author @mikecopperman whose new book about Kenny just came out.
