The Story of Pedro

I first met Pedro in a little dog sanctuary in San Pedro de Alcántara, southern Spain.

I was told he’d be short and fat.

Then I saw him.

Something about him spoke to me.

So Pedro came home.

And from that day on, he was the best dog ever to walk the earth.

He was my true companion.

My soul dog.

Wherever he went, he brought joy.

He looked like a little teddy bear with a fabulous beard, and his whole face seemed to smile at the world.

When I started my dog daycare business, Pedro was the reason.

He was extraordinary with other dogs. He made them feel safe, relaxed and happy.

So we created what became known as the Pedro Treatment: helping dogs socialise, settle and become a little more like Pedro.

Chilled out.

Relaxed.

And above all…

happy.

For seven years, Pedro was the star.

The reason people came.

The reason they trusted us with their dogs.

Not because of me.

Because of the Boss Dog.

Pedro.

But to me, he was never just the Boss Dog at work.

He was there through every difficult day.

No judgement.

No questions.

Just Pedro.

An angel in a little teddy-bear body.

And now, somehow, I believe he has returned to where he came from.

His sister from another mister, Fi, has her wings too, and she has taken over his mantle.

The Boss Dog may be gone…

but his spirit lives on.

In her.

In me.

And in every dog who received the Pedro Treatment.

It is a sad day.

But it is also a joyous one, because I was lucky enough to meet my soul dog.

I believe Pedro will return to us somehow.

I don’t know where.

I don’t know when.

But dogs like Pedro don’t simply disappear.

They leave pawprints on your heart…

and somehow, they find their way home again.

The Hawaiians have a word: kahu.

It means someone entrusted with the care and protection of another.

Looking after Pedro was an honour.

My mitzvah

But the truth is, I think he was looking after me too.

He gave me more joy, love and companionship than almost anyone I have ever known.

Pedro was my companion.

My teacher.

My business partner.

My protector.

My reason to keep going.

My soul dog.

My Boss Dog.

Forever grateful that I had the honour of sharing my taken in Altrincham by @pedroandpals

One of Pedro's last contributions to being kind,
was leading his pack to be filmed for the #bbc in this little video about the history of dogs.
.
It just about sums up my #SoulDog
.
All featured dogs have had the Pedro Treatment and we were asked as he has a reputation of being a great and kind pack leader.
.
Forever grateful for the privilege of having looked after him.
He is with us on every walk, every bench and adventures!

And breathe!

Well, well, well You can never tell!what a week it has been. ❤️🐾
It’s been one of the toughest weeks of my life, losing my soulmate, my beautiful Pedro.

Last night, for the first time, I realised just how much I needed to hear the music again — the music that has been a red thread running through my life, carrying me through the good times and the bad and somehow always filling my soul when I need it most.

So off I went to beautiful Hebden Bridge to see the Grateful Dudes.
And, of course, Pedro came dancing with me. 🐾🌹
Within minutes of arriving I met a new friend Dan in the car park… just as an ambulance was pulling away. You couldn’t make it up. 😂 The last time I went dancing to the Dudes
music, I ended up leaving in one of those after my heart attack!

So this was also the first proper test of the old ticker — and the dancing shoes.
Dan very kindly let me join him for dinner. Or, more accurately, I invited myself… which anyone who knows me will recognise as fairly standard behaviour. 😂
Then we wandered through lovely Hebden Bridge to the gig and there they all were — my tribe. The wonderful, warm, slightly mad UK Deadhead family. Old friends, unexpected reunions, hugs, laughter and so many familiar faces. And especially lovely to see Scott and Hayley. ❤️

Then the music started.
And I danced.
I danced for Pedro. I danced because my heart needed it. I danced to fill my soul again.
And somewhere amongst the music, the smiles and all those beautiful people, I could feel my little mate right there with me.
Pedro would never have missed a party. ❤️🐾
A spectacular night. A night for the ages. The old ticker behaved itself, the music worked its magic, and for a few precious hours my soul felt a little fuller again.
This one was for you, Pedro.
Keep dancing, #SoulDog

Ps: Pedro from heaven, miracled in a 14 year old kid who came to the show..yes, I had a spare ticket , not realising that it would go to a kids first gig, who wasn't initially allowed in.

Scotland is magical!
Love the people, beaches, food, golf!
A much needed recharge of the battery was needed and so off we popped to the Kingdom of Fife, the East of Neuk.
.
That's just south of St.Andrews on the coastal path where we spend a few days both without other people's dogs!
Ate, walked on the beaches, played back gammon, drank some whiskey, played some golf and just watched the harbour and the sea.
Pure bliss and much needed.

☀️ Summer has officially arrived at Casa Pedro! 🐾
The regular crew have checked in, and the holiday season is underway!
Our VIP guests: 🐶 Mr Fergus #CatalanSheepdog 🐶 Ms Bea #Westie 🐶 Ms Ripley #BostonTerrier
Standing proudly at either end are my faithful bookends: ❤️ Boss Dog Pedro ❤️ Mama Bear Fi #SpanishRescueDogs

For the next month I'll be happily surrounded by wagging tails, muddy paws, wet noses, and unconditional love. I wouldn't have it any other way.
.
Dogs are the greatest radiators of all. They warm your heart, lift your spirits, and remind you what really matters. The best medicine there is.
.
As for me... after a rather unexpected pit stop, a full service, a shiny new part, and an MOT that passed with flying colours, I'm delighted to report I'm back on the road with a clean bill of health! 🚗❤️
Everything appears to be in good working order. It just needs a gentle test drive... but that's another conversation! 😉😂

Keep on keeping on.

The Chief Walker headed off to his annual gathering with the #Deadhead tribe in the beautiful Cotswolds.
.
Life, however, had other plans.
On Saturday morning I suffered a massive heart attack. Thanks to the extraordinary ambulance crews who got to me so quickly, and the brilliant team at Gloucester Royal Hospital, I was in the right place at the right time. They fitted a stent, gave me what felt like a full MOT and service, and, amazingly, I genuinely feel better now than I did before.
I will never be able to thank everyone involved enough.
A very special thank you to my wonderful friend Debbie, who came to collect me and drove us all safely home. You're one of the good ones. ❤️
This past week has been quieter than usual, giving me time to reflect.
It's made me accept that life is precious, that none of us are here forever, and that every single day is a gift. It has reminded me who I am, what really matters, and just how important it is to tell people you love them, wear your good shirts, and stop saving life for "one day."
Because tomorrow isn't promised.
So... be kind. Laugh often. Hug your dogs. Spend time with the people who lift you up.
Surround yourself with radiators, not drains.
Go and live.
Thank you to everyone who has sent messages, good wishes and love. I have felt every single one of them.
Have a wonderful week ahead.
