Not every day you get to announce the theatrical release of your first feature film.

Narciso arriving in cinemas marks a major milestone in my journey as a composer, and I’m deeply grateful for the trust and generosity behind this project.

Huge thanks to Jeferson De and Cris Arenas for the invitation and creative openness, and to all the incredible musicians, engineers, and crew who helped bring this score to life.

Me and Amanda had just arrived in California when @jefersondebr and @cristiarenas invited us to watch their new movie (at that time) within the program of the Pan-African Film Festival in Crenshaw, Los Angeles. @mariocaldatostudio was there and I was kind of in shock, foolishly touching Amanda and saying “look look, Mario C is right behind me, Beastie Boys producer” as she goes “ask him for a picture” and I “no no that’s so annoying” but I had the courage to go and ask. @samanthacaldato took a look at us and said “CHURRASQUINHO LA EM CASA AMANHÃ?”. Instant connection - something hard to explain. We became good friends over the past 8 years.

During the pandemic I was focused on practicing my clarinet preparing orchestral excerpts when they invited me to produce my remix for the Orquestra Afro-Brasileira but I had no studio. So I bought an MPC and accepted it. Spent days figuring out the machine and listening to this record. Chopped it into a thousand little pieces and put fragments if not from the whole album most of it into my remix. I think you can hear samples from at least 8 songs of the album. Made 5 or 6 beats out of it, and figured out how to transition from one to the other, but a couple got out of the mix.

Then I called my talented friends @ceronflachneves to record drums, bass, and guitar on the beats and it was awesome. I was so stoked. When the base was ready I sent it to @zilladxg and his lyrics for the last beat was like a strawberry to a New York cheesecake.

Mario C mixed it and the rest is history, memory. It’s such a wonderful feeling to be featured as producer in an album alongside artists that I love. Shoutout to all of them. Some, I looked up to when I was a teenager, growing up listening to rap music, perhaps in the same day I would listen to Coltrane, Debussy, and Milton Nascimento.

Ten years ago, if someone had told me I would one day share a track with Seu Jorge, Mario Caldato Jr., Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Beck, and so many extraordinary musicians, I would probably have mistaken it for fantasy.

Life can be unexpectedly generous sometimes.

Hoje fazem 36 anos que a deusa da graça e da leveza nasceu. @amandahummes veio ao mundo trazendo um mar de emoções e uma inteligência coletiva de se admirar, mas essas não foram as únicas qualidades que ela trouxe, tudo que ela toca se acalma, se harmoniza, se embeleza. A minha vida mudou pra melhor desde que estamos juntos, sou mais feliz e completo, as coisinhas que faço tem mais significado e direção.
