Okiki Akinfe at Peer is now open ✨✨✨

‘RM9 5AN’ is a new commission and the first solo exhibition in a public art organisation by London-based artist Okiki Akinfe.

Comprising a new series of large-scale oil paintings and lightboxes, Okiki’s exhibition continues her ongoing engagement with identity, memory, class and place.

We’re open Wednesday to Saturday, 12-6pm
Exhibition continues until 8 August.

🌞 Coming up next week… Hackney Circle’s Summer Social

We’re really looking forward to this year’s Hackney Circle Summer Social next Wednesday! Three Peer Ambassadors from the current cohort will be hosting an intergenerational storytelling exchange. Through conversations and interviews conducted by the Ambassadors, the group will create a memory map of Hackney - visually plotting places, stories and memories to represent the different voices of the borough.

Artist Okiki Akinfe’s new commission for Peer, ‘RM9 5AN’, is open Wednesday - Saturday 12 - 6pm. Peer is free and all are welcome.

Here are some key pieces of access info to help you plan your next visit…

▪️ Our gallery and workshop space are located on the ground floor, which is a level area and wheelchair accessible. The gallery has step free access and the front door is a width of 86cm.

▪️ Peer’s office is a flexible space that has been used in the past as a quiet space, prayer space, and baby changing area. Please ask gallery staff if you would like access to this space and we would be happy to accommodate.

▪️ It is often quieter, with fewer visitors on Wednesday afternoons. There are often more visitors on Saturdays.

▪️ We have seating available if you would like to sit down, please ask one of our Ambassadors on the front desk

If we can do anything to make your visit more enjoyable, please feel free to reach out via email or call us - you can find contact details on our website under ‘Access’.

🌱 We’re excited to welcome a new member to the team, Peer’s new gardener Carley Wootton, who is maintaining and nurturing our public green space, Khadija’s Garden. 🌻

Carley has already transplanted the sunflowers that the current cohort of Peer Ambassadors recently planted from seed for Khadija’s Garden — keep a look out for them as they have started to flower! She continues to help the garden flourish as a memorial space for Khadija Saye, a previous Peer employee, and all those tragically killed in the Grenfell fire. Alongside her role at Peer, Carley is the Head Gardener for Grosvenor Square, a newly redesigned ecological garden in Mayfair. She has also held positions as Garden Manager for the Story Garden in King's Cross and as the Community Gardener for Hospitalfield in Arbroath, Scotland. She gardens to support the health of soil, plants, pollinators and people.

When you’re next in Hoxton, take a minute to enjoy the garden and come say hi.

📽️ Today we’re looking back into the archive at Peer’s 2018 exhibition, ‘Breadrock’, by artist collective Fourthland (Isik Sayarer and Eva Knutsdotter) and artist and filmmaker Rosalind Fowler.

Reflecting on a ten-year collaboration with the communities of Wenlock Barn Estate, the work was a homage to cultural history, memory and universal myth, and included projects connecting the land and people of the Estate.

The ‘Breadrock’ exhibition was made up of a series of staged vignettes, drawing on the rituals and artefacts of the Estate’s Bangladeshi, European, Kurdish, Serbian, Turkish, Ugandan and West Indian communities, to create new kinships and myths. Shot on 16mm film, ‘Breadrock’ manifests the inner worlds of Wenlock’s inhabitants.

Rosalind Fowler is known for her explorations of the politics and poetics of place and belonging in the contemporary English landscape - ideas that resonate with Peer’s current exhibition, ‘RM9 5AN’, by artist Okiki Akinfe.

Poet Phoenix Yemi will host the evening of written and instrumental responses to Okiki Akinfe's current exhibition at Peer, 'RM9 5AN'.

Okiki will be performing one of her most recent written works, in addition to poetry and improvised sound by musicians Arnold Chukwu, Gabriel Dedji, Anna Adetiba, and Alex DT.

🎨 The Ambassadors have been busy taking part in workshops over the past few months, including this one with Okiki Akinfe, whose exhibition 'RM9 5AN' is currently on show at Peer.

Okiki led the group in a collage workshop inspired by the framing of her exhibition, a love letter to her local high street. Thinking about the ways she uses photography during the early stages of her painting process, Ambassadors took their own photos of Hoxton street and used them to build a large-scale collaborative collage - their own love letter to the area.

The finished piece was shared at our neighbour’s Hoxton Hall’s 'May’s Day' celebration. Thank you Okiki for leading this workshop!

🗞️ Handout highlight 🗞️

‘While creating this love letter I saw the growing changes in my local high street, including the influence of far right-wing politics growing in strength in this community. As a counter to this situation, I wanted to think about and reference other gentle experiences I have had in this place. ✍️ Peer Recommends…

This year, in collaboration with our neighbours over at Shoreditch Library, the Peer Ambassadors are exploring creative writing, storytelling, and overlooked local histories, so we thought it would be interesting to highlight an event taking place at the library next Tuesday.

As part of the month-long Hackney Writers Festival that has been happening throughout June across several Hackney libraries, Shoreditch Library is hosting the ‘Shoreditch Black Women Writers Group’ on Tues 30 Jun.

This event is a supportive group for Black women writers led by local writer and dramaturg Lisa Ogun’. It is for budding authors who are looking for inspiration or an opportunity to meet other writers and share readings of written works with each other - a taster session for the writing groups that meet regularly across Hackney libraries.

✨ Join us and Black Geographies on the 17 July for a special evening of sound and performance shaped in response to Okiki Akinfe’s current exhibition, ‘RM5 9AN’. 🎶

Black Geographies - a living chorus of poets and musicians rooted in resistance, memory, embodiment, and the sacredness of place - will present written and instrumental responses to the work.

The evening will be hosted by poet Phoenix Yemi and will unfold through poetry and improvised sound from Arnold Chukwu (clarinet), Gabriel Dedji (keyboard), Anna Adetiba (saxophone), and Alex DT (percussion). Okiki will also be reading her text, ‘The History of Chicken and Chips’ during the evening.
