Remembered by history as the woman who murdered seven men. The monster sentenced to death by a judge who asked the Lord to have mercy on her corpse, as though her crimes were so abhorrent that even her soul was beyond redemption. But Aileen Wuornos was more than the crimes for which she was executed. She was a deeply damaged, angry and fractured woman, shaped by a lifetime of cruelty, abuse, exploitation and abandonment. She was sexually abused by her grandfather, her brother and classmates. At 14, she gave birth to a baby conceived through rape, and was thrown out of her family home, forced to survive in the freezing woods of Michigan and sell her body because she had nowhere else to turn. Her life became one of hitchhiking, prostitution and transient survival, seemingly conditioned to believe that her worth began and ended with what others could take from her. In 1986, at 30, Aileen met Tyria Moore, the woman she would regard as the love of her life. Yet even this relationship was complicated by vulnerability, dependency and exploitation. Tyria knew the dangers Aileen faced through her work and reportedly continued accepting financial support from her after learning that Aileen had shot and killed at least one man. I do not believe every killing after Richard Mallory’s death was an act of self-defence. Aileen herself acknowledged that some of her actions could not be justified that way. But I do believe a lifetime of sexual violence, trauma, rejection and abuse contributed to the profound unravelling of a woman who had seemingly never been afforded safety, tenderness or unconditional love. I’m not saying what Aileen did was right, or that she shouldn’t have been held responsible. But I also don’t think we should forget what she endured. You can feel sympathy for the pain she suffered without excusing the pain she caused. In 2016, Soft Skull Press approached me to create a limited-edition cover for Dear Dawn. My management advised me against taking the project, and that choice was taken away from me, a decision I have regretted ever since. Not because I wished to romanticise Aileen or diminish the lives she took, but because I felt there was a human story by @pegasusart

I’ve been told Dolly has already been pulled from the wall and dumped on the ground. Honestly, the behaviour is as predictable as ever. This isn’t the first time I’ve been shown disrespect in this area, and after 15 years, you’d think certain people would have finally realised one very simple thing….I will not be stopped.
