Santa Maria cont…

We just love being with the young missionaries! We visited a zone conference in Santa Maria and in Santo Angelo which is another area David served in. David enjoyed telling them and showing them what these areas were like back in the day. 🤣🤣

It’s so heart warming seeing these amazing young people who are willing to devote two years of their lives to full time service to God. (18 mos for girls.) They continually inspire us. 🥰 by @peggydearl

Last week we visited the Santa Maria mission. President and Sister Williams are delightful. And they are from WA! (They’re on the west side but we won’t hold that against them.😉) He is a high school history teacher which seems like such perfect preparation for a mission president.

Santa Maria is a special place for David because that’s one of only 3 areas he served in during his time in the Porto Alegre mission. Back then Santa Maria only had 2 branches. Now it is its own mission! 🥰

The Williams have a top floor apartment with a little pool and a great view. (We also visited the Whittaker’s here on our last mission.) Santa Maria is much more rural and quiet than São Paulo.

We had to visit the Catholic Church because it was being built when David was there and they would contribute on their utility bill. So David had to see how the church he helped pay for turned out. 😍

You will see in the video we took of our drive there that at times we felt right at home with the farms we saw along the road.

Also we visited the old Jesuit mission that David used to visit on Pdays. He said they went there about 5-6 times. (He was in Santa Maria for a year!) They used to take a football and play on the grass. taken in Centro, Santa Maria by @peggydearl

Two sad anniversaries. Bad things happen to good people. That’s an unfortunate part of life. God gave us our agency. How we use it is the test. But all will be made well through Jesus Christ. The lesson is to keep turning towards God… as individuals, as families, as communities, as nations and as a world. 🙏

So in our continuing saga of trying to get back to Brazil, allow me to recap. We were scheduled to leave Seattle on Sunday and return on Monday morning.
Sunday:
Seattle → Albuquerque → Dallas
Flight was cancelled in Dallas due to maintenance and we were rebooked through Miami for Tuesday.
Tuesday:
Dallas → Miami
Flight was delayed 3 times out of Dallas due to 2 of 4 runways being closed because of the previous crash in Miami. Rebooked for Wed. night.
Wednesday:
Miami → São Paulo
Flight left as planned and we got home on Thursday! 👏👏👏

So we took a boat tour of Miami and visited Vizcaya Mansion and Gardens. This was the former home of the Deering family who made farm equipment (International Harvester.) The home was mostly under renovation but we still enjoyed the visit.

I have to say that @americanair treated us very well and paid for all the hotels. They were the most enjoyable flight delays we’ve ever had! 🥰 But it’s so nice to finally make it back to São Paulo. ✈️ taken in Miami, Florida by @peggydearl

The bad news is… our flight to São Paulo was cancelled. 😭 The good news is… Dallas/Ft. Worth is a delightful place to get stuck in. I think I could fall in love with Texas. 🥰 Had an unplanned but fun Labor Day in Fort Worth! We even escaped!! taken in Fort Worth Stockyards by @peggydearl

While home I got to see all of my kids and my sister, Julie, and her husband, Arne. What a blessing! I did not take very many pictures. 😞 I feel like when I choose to live in the moment, I have fun but then I regret not having photos to look back on. 🤷‍♀️ #cantwin
But being with my family was the best! 🥰 And David even got to mow his beloved lawn. 🏎️ by @peggydearl

We were able to come home from Brazil for Doug’s funeral. It was such an unexpected gift to be able to be with our kids and extended family almost halfway through our mission. Despite the circumstances, it was a joy to be together! 🥰 taken in Moses Lake, Washington by @peggydearl

You know what’s interesting? Attending a funeral for a person who planned it himself. 🤣 And it was… awesome! 😍 I don’t know whether to give Doug the credit or his kids? Was it the planning or the follow through? 🤔 It’s a tough call. Let’s give Doug (and Connie) the credit for raising such amazing humans who had the ability to hit the ball he pitched them out of the park. ⚾️ And brother Jeff was the cherry on top! 🍒

Full disclosure… I love funerals. 🥰 As sad as they are, I love ‘em! Why? Because you get the chance to feel so deeply and to ponder the meaning of life. The deeper the love or the tragedy or the untimeliness of the death, the deeper the feelings. And you can’t manufacture those feelings. Yes, a good movie or book can get close but it’s not as good as the real deal. The Holy Spirit is often tangible at funerals and it sure was at this one.

How do I even describe this funeral? It was stupendous. 🤩 I knew it would be a celebration of his life with a twinge of sadness at his leaving us so soon. (He was taken earlier than any of us wanted but 78 is a gift not everyone gets so there was reason to celebrate.) But I wasn’t prepared to feel ALL the feels! It was heartbreaking and heartwarming and inspiring and comical and hopeful. It was all that and a bowl of suckers!

The minute Doug found out he was “possibly” dying, he started planning his funeral. But I suspect that his planning started way before that. Doug was playing the long game. I think he raised his kids with his funeral in mind. And it worked. Oh it worked real good! Well played, Doug, well played. 🏌️

Doug decided who the speakers would be and what their topics would be. All of his kids spoke and one sang a beautiful song he had written himself. They weren’t all thrilled with their assigned topics. Yet, somehow, Doug was able to get his kids to stay on topic and deliver the message he wanted delivered but with their own insightful spin on it. His message was the same message he devoted his life to…

I've been in Arizona helping out with Baby Max for the last two weeks. What a joy! (except for the heat! 113 (g) Then Kylie, Max and I flew into Moses Lake for Doug's funeral. I'm missing my mission but happy to be able to be here for these milestones. Be back soon, Brazil!😘 by @peggydearl
