Came to Hokkaido for a conference, but took the chance to explore whenever I could. There’s something nice about finding a little room for yourself in the middle of a work trip. A few hikes, an unreasonable amount of good food, and plenty of wandering around Sapporo and beyond.

The conference was great too, allegedly.

A little road between mountains,
a horse breathing in the morning cold,
grass running endlessly into the distance,
the sky so wide
it made everything else feel small.

I miss the long drives
with nowhere we needed to be,
the off-key singing,
the jokes that made no sense,
the conversations that meandered
as much as the roads did,
and the unplanned stops
at places we didn’t know
we were seeing
for the last time.

I miss how little we needed there,
the basic minimum-
a warm cup of tea between cold hands,
dust on our boots,
the miles beneath us,
and hours that drifted
as gently as the roads did,
so gently
we never thought to count them
while they counted.

Perhaps most strangely,
I miss the person I was there-
the one who wandered
as freely as the roads did
beneath skies too wide to measure,
through grasslands too vast to find an edge,
hoofbeats rising
and fading,
dust trailing behind,
with only the horizon ahead.

Now Kyrgyzstan is far away,
the mountains live in photographs,
our laughter lingers in old videos,
and those days have folded away somewhere
beyond the last bend
of a road
I can no longer follow,
except in memory.

But on days like this,
when life feels too loud,
I close my eyes
and find myself there again-
a little road between mountains,
on horseback in the morning cold,
grass running endlessly into the distance,
the sky so wide
it makes everything else feel small.

And for a little while,
I don’t miss Kyrgyzstan.

Kyrgyzstan was a small pocket of time that felt wonderfully removed from everything else - long days between mountains and open roads, horses and hiking trails, vast expanses of grassland, spontaneous stops, silly dances and loud, terrible singalongs.

It was easy to let the days carry us and just vanish into those roads, those mountains, and the little moments in between. Happy just to be there, happy just to be alive.

How little we needed for those days to feel full!

I came to Nepal expecting mountains.

What I didn’t expect was how much the silence would speak, how the trail would humble me, and how deeply this place would root itself in me.

Twelve days around Manaslu stripped everything down in the best possible way - breath, footsteps, horizon, gratitude. Simple things that somehow felt sacred up there. Third time here, and the Himalayas still find new ways to reach deeper than I knew I had.

Oh hi! Just realised that this is my first post of 2025, because well, work got the better of me 🥲

But somewhere between the steady crunch of gravel underfoot and the stillness of the trees on Mt. Kerinci, I felt something I hadn't in a while: presence.

Not rushing to the next deadline, not replaying yesterday - just being fully here. Breathing, climbing, noticing.
