1st day of SEVENTH grade for Romeo! I’m not sure exactly when it happened, but we are now practically eye to eye 😭 I am glad he wanted all of his back to school clothes baggy, because I’m pretty sure they won’t be by the end of the year.
We are super proud of this guy and looking forward to seeing how he juggles soccer (see what I did there) and the apparently obscene amount of homework he is convinced he is going to have 😆 by @penala_oki

We have a first grader! 🥳 River said goodbye to his amazing teachers and friends at Santa Monica last week. It was honestly hard on all of us (us being me and him…I may have cried a little). But, he showed up to his first day at his new school smiling and telling his teacher he was excited 🥰 So far, so good! Celebrating with a “magnificent” egg sandwich while we watch his big bro play soccer.
I asked him what would be a good song to put with his post. “Probably Bones. It’s my favorite song.” by @penala_oki

Omg you guys…I’m in love! 🥰 I’m also really late to post. On July 9th, Ryan and I reached 16 years of wedded bliss! A typhoon interrupted our original plans, but we were able to have a rager from 4:30-7:30 on a Sunday night. We still got it! We walked around talking about how awesome and old we are. Then we sat down and talked about our kids and lives and plans while we ate sushi. Then we walked some more until we found a good piece of seawall to sit on while we watched some surfers do their best. No one else could make me this happy. Watching this group become so close in such a short amount of time has been one of my favorite parts of the last year. They found each other quickly, laughed constantly, showed up for one another, and became the kind of friends that feel like they’ve known each other forever.
Now, just as fast, they’re having to say goodbye to multiple members of the group in one summer. 😭
Military kids have to do this over and over again. It’s something I only did once when growing up and I’m STILL bitter about it. So, I have all the more respect for the resiliency they are demonstrating.
I’m incredibly grateful Romeo found them. This group has brought him so much joy, and watching all of them play as a team, go on island adventures, and have the most ridiculous giggle fits has been everything I could hope for him.
To the families who are moving, thank you for raising such amazing kids and welcoming mine into your homes. You will be so, so missed ❤️ by @penala_oki

Another very successful resiliency day for our Quality Assurance team! When I told them we would meet first at a park, they said that they assumed “Ms. Penny is probably making us run” and dressed accordingly 😂
Instead, we had a great talk and activity on behavior and value alignment, followed by lunch, then retrieving a stolen crown from a vault. In true Quality Assurance fashion, even after we got the crown, they insisted on spending 20 more minutes making sure we covered everything…very unnecessarily. by @penala_oki

Happy Father’s Day to the greatest! We started with a breakfast of his requests. I was fighting for my life in there trying to make something half as good as he makes me. But, he is sweet, so he said it was delicious. The rest of the day was spent outside with a bug hunt, swimming off the seawall, and tide pooling before CoCos Curry. No day could have possibly done this guy justice, tbh. He really is the best. ❤️ by @penala_oki

River’s school gave him and his classmates such a special ceremony! No wonder he had been counting down for weeks. I somehow did not sob the whole time, but tears were shed. Congrats to my Star Reader, Math Master, and Creative Thinker! So grateful to this school for being such a positive introduction to education for him. It will be sad to say goodbye after this summer, but he is legitimately excited to see what his new school has in store for him 🥰 by @penala_oki

Ryan heads to the states today, but he still made sure I got my traditional long run followed by gifts and breakfast with my boys 🥰 Happy Mother’s Day to all the women who put those that need and love them ahead of themselves. I hope you all feel loved and appreciated, especially today. by @penala_oki

My work is an interesting mix of sitting with people in some of their most challenging times and getting to witness what healing can look like beyond those moments.

Then I have days like today’s resiliency outing at a beautiful beach with sunshine and a water park.
