✨ Book Review ✨

📖 Oli and the Island of Intsomi
✍️ Siphokazi Jonas @siphokazi_j
🎨 Luyanda Cwane @luyandacwane

I already knew the author was a remarkable storyteller after hearing her speak at the @penguinbookssouthafrica @penguinkidssa Children's Media event earlier this year. I remember being absolutely wowed by her, and reading this book only deepened my appreciation for her talent.

Siphokazi Jonas is a special kind of storyteller. One who draws you into her world and makes you feel the magic of her words.

We follow Oli on her journey to the mysterious Island of Intsomi, but this story offers much more than adventure. It explores identity, belonging, heritage and the importance of preserving our stories. It reminds us that stories are not simply things we read or tell. They carry pieces of who we are, where we come from, and the generations that came before us.

And it is so beautiful seeing these themes woven into a children's story in a way that invites young readers to discover, question and imagine.

The illustrations bring another layer of magic to the story, making reading feel even more immersive. One of my favourite little details was how each chapter had pages in different colours. It was such a lovely, thoughtful touch that made the book feel distinctive and added to the joy of reading it.

We appreciated how well the storytelling and illustrations work together to create such a lovely book. This is the kind of book that can spark conversations with children and adults alike, allowing us space to talk about our roots, identity and the stories we inherit, while also reminding us of the importance of keeping our stories alive.

Siphokazi Jonas, you have created something truly special ❤️

My Rating:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 5

What do a happy dog and a sad dog have in common? 🐶

They’re both waiting to meet your little reader!

Happy Dog, Sad Dog by Sam Lloyd is a bright, playful board book that introduces toddlers to first words and opposites through a collection of adorable doggy pairs.

Big and little. Hairy and bald. Happy and sad. Each page gives little ones something new to spot, name and talk about – making story time a fun opportunity for learning together.

With cheerful illustrations and sturdy board-book pages made for little hands, this is a lovely first book to share with babies and toddlers.

And for parents, there’s even a handy guide with ideas for making reading time more interactive.

🐾 Ready to meet some very good dogs?

Sweet dreams, Baby Unicorn! 🦄✨

But first… there's a whole bedtime routine to get through!

Little ones can help Baby Unicorn get ready for bed by using the fun flaps and sliders throughout the story. Give her a bubbly bath, put on her cosy starry pyjamas, brush her mane and tail, clean her teeth, and choose a bedtime story.

Once everything is done, it's time to tuck Baby Unicorn in, switch off the light, and settle down for the night. 🌙

Ten Minutes to Bed: Time for Bed, Baby Unicorn is an interactive bedtime story that mirrors the familiar routines little ones know, making it a lovely addition to your nightly wind-down.

Perfect for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers who love joining in with their stories—and perhaps need a little extra help getting sleepy!

Last year, we raised R288,190. This year, let's go even bigger!

📚 Wimpy Kid readers, you did THAT! And we're back for more. 🎉

Last year, our Diary of a Wimpy Kid x The Bookery campaign raised an incredible R288,190 to help bring school libraries to learners across South Africa. That's a whole lot of laughs turning into something truly meaningful!

Now, we're doing it all over again — and this year, we're dreaming even bigger. 💛

From 1 October 2026 to 31 January 2027, Penguin Random House South Africa will donate R5 to @thebookerycpt for every Diary of a Wimpy Kid title sold during the campaign.

Every book counts. Every purchase helps. And together, we can help more children discover the joy of reading and the possibilities that come with it.

So, whether you're buying Greg's latest misadventure or adding another book to your collection, you're helping us build brighter futures, one book at a time.

Let's beat last year's total. Are you in? 👀
