How can healthcare workers keep patients safe if they aren’t safe??

Workplace violence in our hospitals and healthcare systems is a huge problem, but there ARE solutions! ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Yesterday, the Workplace Violence Prevention Bill (HB 926) passed in the state House with bipartisan support! What does this bill do?

- It gives the state the power to hold hospitals accountable when they ignore safety plans they are supposed to follow.

- It establishes dedicated workplace prevention committees within every health facility.

- It requires annual risk assessments to identify and address factors contributing to violence. And it calls for the development of tailored prevention programs based on the data from these assessments.

- It protects healthcare workers from retaliation against those who report incidents of workplace violence.

The next step for this bill is a vote in the state Senate. We need this bill to go all the way. Healthcare workers deserve to be safe while they’re caring for patients!

@TempleHealth management is not bargaining in good faith. After a series of insulting proposals, including a 2.1% wage increase and the addition of ONE Custom Protection Officer per shift for the ENTIRE hospital in the face of widespread serious safety concerns, caregivers got up and left the table for the day.

We agreed to move our strike deadline in a good faith attempt to come to a fair agreement.

We should be on the same team working for the same goals – a safer hospital and working conditions that allow caregivers to provide our patients with quality care.

It’s time for management to start working with caregivers – if not, we’ll see you on Broad Street.

WHEN PRIVATE EQUITY BUYS A HOSPITAL, PATIENTS PAY THE PRICE

The private equity playbook in healthcare is all about extracting as much money as possible from a healthcare facility, then cutting and running. It happened at Hahnemann Hospital in Philadelphia and, after that, the Crozer Health system in Delaware County. The devastating impact of hospital closures can’t be understated. But it isn’t the only way private equity harms patients. The harm starts way before a hospital closes its doors.

A 2023 JAMA study comparing more than 4.8 million Medicare hospitalizations found a significant uptick in patient complications in hospitals acquired by private equity firms. The researchers’ conclusion: Private equity acquisition is associated with poorer quality care. Period.

That’s why we need House Bill 1460, a bill born out of the devastating collapse of the Crozer Health system after years of outright looting by private equity-backed owner Prospect Medical Holdings.

When private equity puts profits over patients, entire communities pay the price.

Pennsylvania has already seen the devastating consequences at Crozer and Hahnemann. Hospitals closed, healthcare workers lost their jobs, and families lost access to care they depended on.
