When I was young and struggled with academics, imagine the relief I had because my older sister was the smartest person I knew. Right? NOPE! Turns out I was unteachable and couldn't even comprehend her vocabulary. Understandably so, I received a lot of eye rolls and her patience expired. Her poems were incredibly eloquent, some of the most impactful only had a handful of words. Fast forward to the present, you'll find many text threads that start with "What's a good word for...?" or "Can you make this sound better?" My next guest on deck is that word nerd, my sister MISHELE MIYAKE. by @pennyfair

HAPPY 107th BIRTHDAY to my grandfather Akemi Miyake. He was one of the pioneers who brought the concept of organic farming from Japan to the US in 1937. By 1940, organic farming was spreading nationwide. Throughout the years many people have asked me what his secret to longevity is. Since I was little, my grandfather has lived a life with immense purpose. He is a man of God, a lover of sports, is never short in expression of gratitude, surrounded by family, and to this day, he spends time in meditation. Those are just a few of my takeaways. "I THINK MY WORK ETHIC is largely influenced by my family, especially my dad. He would work long days and weekends. When he wasn't at work, he would do a lot of projects around the house. Both of my parent's examples, mixed with enforcing chores helped shape me a lot."

"I always desire to improve in my skillset with work at the salon. At home, I want to improve my proficiencies with raising my children. My dad always had an, "I'm gonna make it happen" attitude when met with obstacles and would verbally say so. I think your outlook and stating it with that posture makes a huge difference." 

"Conversations that captivate me most are the ones that are genuine and real. Sincere interest to get to know the other person is a must. When someone has fun insight or a good sense of humor that leads to a lot of laughter, I'm hooked."

"Going to the gym is the only pastime I've been able to keep up with. I'm hoping to get back into music and surfing eventually. Having 2 kids is no joke!"

When I first met Jake there were no doubts the guy was excellent at GETTING WORK DONE! When covid rocked the salons, we were among the few who endured working outside in the mosquito infested, sweaty summer heat. It was diabolical but we persisted and it was his sharp witted sense of humor that became a balm for the everlasting hustle. Often times we were the first to arrive and last to leave the salon. During that time I learned he also tackled the early morning shift at Trader Joe's before a lengthy day-evening at The Young American Salon (where he currently works), was a guitarist and vocalist in worship bands, exercised regularly, and always devoted time to his family. Fast forward to the present, Jake is now married with 2 kids and will throw light on The Art of Diligence. by @pennyfair

Adrian broke her toe in jiu jitsu the day before her last performance for School of Rock Pearland. She's out on drums until her foot heals but still got to perform bass guitar. She will be attending Divine Savior Academy next school year and we're excited to see what musical opportunities open! Thank you to our amazing friends for coming to the show ❤️ by @pennyfair

THE ART OF SHOWING UP @mbynon14 

From playing on sports teams at a young age, to coaching, and now working alongside colleagues and friends, I’ve learned that showing up is one of the simplest yet most powerful things we can do for each other. It’s about consistency, commitment, and being present even when circumstances are difficult or inconvenient. Despite pre-season conditioning in high school, double days in college, or a day without a nap in my forties, I miraculously pulled through and showed up for the people I cared about. Whether it was for family, friends, coworkers, or shoot, even for myself, showing up meant building trust and proving I was dependable. That was always something I learned firsthand from both of my parents. They showed support at every school function, every sports game for my brother and I.. EVERY SINGLE THING! Now, I currently see us doing the same for my son, carrying on what they taught me about the impact of being present.

Maya Angelou said: “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” To me, that means showing up goes beyond just being in the room. It’s about paying attention and being all-in, creating an atmosphere where people feel valued. It’s a lesson I bring to every role I take on and something I hope my son will learn too: that even in a world where commitments are often short-term, people come and go, consistently showing up matters.
