On view in Park Water @jamesolivergallery in Philadelphia , last day for viewing is Saturday 8/3 open 1-8pm.

I’ve been very grateful to have this large piece installed in this gorgeous space- to create and share a new chapel for the decomposers- so we could exalt the compost pile, and consider that the fungal psychopomps can guide us through the turning of the wheel. taken in James Oliver Gallery by @pennysmasher

We had the joy of meeting with professional teaching and community artist Katie Kaplan (@pennysmasher) to learn about how her vibrant, multidisciplinary art weaves together themes of identity and community.

Join Katie this Friday at 5pm for our Pride celebration night, where you’ll have the chance to create your own paper quilt—celebrating LGBTQIA+ identity through playful exploration of color, shape, and image. by @pennysmasher

‘EVERYTHING ALL AT ONCE: CONTEMPORARY PRINTMAKING IN TWO PARTS’
H. F. Johnson Gallery of Art
In today’s printmaking circles, witty conceptual approaches to the medium are deployed alongside centuries-old techniques. What happens when these disparate approaches to print are displayed together? This group exhibition invites today’s printmakers, spanning process and approach, to show up and show out. We’ll get to see everything all at once. Attend the opening reception for this exhibit from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3 and the artist talk from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, in the H. F. Johnson Gallery of Art. by @pennysmasher

LIFE UPDATE: After nearly a decade in Philadelphia, we are moving to Iowa City where I will be pursuing my MFA in Printmaking at the University of Iowa. I could not have made it here without the help and support of countless friends, mentors and teachers, to whom I am so grateful. This move is incredibly bittersweet- Philly has made me, by way of both lifting me up and chewing me up, and has been a teacher and a home filled with the best of friends. 💔🥲But I’m ready for the next adventure~~if you’re in the Midwest call me up and meet me in the prairie 💛 taken in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by @pennysmasher

Thank you @philamuseum ! It was such an honor to partner with The Philadelphia Museum of Art for Pride Month. We made this limited edition embroidered patch, and it was so special to see my work projected in the Great Stair Hall and sign on the parkway. Check my reels to see the videos they made where I talk about my practice, plants+fungi, and Pride🔻—>swipe to see our new family picture 💚 taken in Philadelphia Museum of Art by @pennysmasher

“It’s very important to me to embrace visibility in terms of identity and to act as a mentor and a Queer role model to the next generation of young artists.”

Pride Month may be ending, but the opportunity and responsibility to amplify Queer voices continues every day. A heartfelt thank you to Katie Kaplan (@pennysmasher) for reminding us of the power of art to connect and provoke thought. Thank you for being a part of this celebration. Let’s continue showing up for the community. by @pennysmasher

We spent time in the garden with our Pride Heritage Month artist, Katie Kaplan (@pennysmasher), to see firsthand how nature shapes and inspires her vibrant work.

This fluorescent, screen printed quilt is currently on view in Of Earthen Kin, Kaplan’s solo exhibition at @phillymagicgardens. Looking to plants as teachers, this work asks: When will we be able to leave behind the disconnection, individualism, and hierarchical natures of our human society, in favor of the communal life of woodland daffodils, roots intermingled, faces all pointed to the sun? by @pennysmasher
