As the nights draw in, our attention turns to what comforts us the most. Soft, rich lambswool cushions we’ve made up using the wonderful archive checks and tartans Ben reimagined in collaboration with Johnston’s of Elgin. Considered one of Scotland’s oldest brands, founded in 1797, making it over 225 years old. Specialising in fine cashmere and woollen fabrics; the company has been in continuous operation for all this time and is one of the last remaining vertical mills in the UK, handling raw materials through to finished products.
Exclusive to Pentreath & Hall and available now. Styling & 📸 by @katybeveridge taken in Pentreath & Hall by @pentreathandhall

Peter Hone’s plaster casts of historical figures come from glossy dark brown plaques attributed to Francois Lepage, who in 1855, secured a patent for what he called ‘Bois Durci’, the combining of blood albumen from slaughterhouses, with fine saw dust to form a plastic mouldable material. The saw dust (either ebony or rose wood), was mixed with blood, dried and then ground to a fine powder. The powder was placed into a steel mould and steam heated to up to 250C in a powerful hydraulic press. After half an hour the mould was plunged into cold water. The resulting wood product was an extremely dense, highly polished material. The most common items available in Bois durci are circular plaques showing royalty or statesmen of the time. We can’t help but think these were improved through Peter’s decision to cast them in creamy plaster of Paris, more suitable to the contemporary interior. Why not start your collection today? Imagery of classical subject matter is a strong theme that runs through Bridie’s work. Using imagery from her vast archive of antique prints for decoupage emerges a colourful take on an Ancient Greek Urn.

Introducing the second addition to the P&H Trivet collection - The Mottled Tortoiseshell Earthenware Trivet.

Made exclusively for Pentreath & Hall by The Phoenix Tile Studio, the last remaining tile factory in Stoke-on-Trent to hand extrude and hand cut their tiles.

Starting with clay being slip cast into a plaster mould and left to dry overnight, they are removed from the mould and cleaned, then stamped with our P&H logo on their backs and left for between 5 - 7 days to dry out evenly before their first firing. This process happens over two weeks.

They are then handed over to Natalie, the mottling queen, who uses a combination of sponge and brush techniques to apply the glazes to achieve the perfect mottle, through various different applications and techniques, ensuring there is consistency but that no two tiles are the same. To get the edges looking so good is a skill in itself!

After this, each trivet is again cleaned of any excess glaze and sprayed with a fine top coat of glaze. Before firing, the backs are again cleaned of any stray glaze then they are packed into the kiln for an overnight firing. This total process takes another week.

After the firing, the backs are sanded to remove any stray bits of glaze and mess that can accumulate during production and handling. The each trivet is checked through quality control before being packed and sent to us. Over sixteen steps make up the production process for these incredible tiles.

Protect surfaces from hot cookware, support the precious potteries of Stoke-on-Trent! Available now!
