Everything comes in waves.

When I started Peony Lane, I threw myself to the wolves and figure out how to make good wine. While waiting for it to age, I had 2 years to figure out how to sell it.

In all that time, I was passively learning how to manage a vineyard, but that was ultimately my dad's responsibility. I would buy grapes from him each year.

Last year I took over the vineyard.

I made a few changes, but mostly ran with his tactics last year. This year its feeling much more my own.

Its going to take years to get it where I want though. I can only make small changes year to year without shocking the system.

I think that's what I love most about it. I love making small improvements over a long time horizon with the ability to make mistakes and learn along the way.

I didn't realize it when I got into wine and Bitcoin at the same time, but long term growth systems with high short term volatility are so exciting to me.

"Choosing the healthy option" at a bar isn't a thing.

Pure alcohol is a poison.
If it's bad for us anyway, why worry about it?

It's easy to get caught in that all or nothing, cheat day mindset and stop asking questions. Even harder once you've had a few.

If you're going from better to best with grain fed vs grass finished beef, why wouldn't you go from worse to not so bad with what you drink?

Choosing your source of alcohol matters as much as choosing your source of meat.

Meet your producer.
Avoid drinks and mixers packed with additives or sugar.

Most importantly, learn from your experience the next morning. Through trial and error you can find drinks that leave you feeling clean and clear. by @peonylanewine

Popped a bottle of my 2021 Merlot last week and it caught me off guard.

I like bright, light, fruity reds. The deep extracted stuff isn't normally my thing except for the strong seasonal food related cravings I get every fall.

This bottle had evolved. The tannins softened. Everything came together in a way that made me rethink the whole wine.

I sold bitcoin to buy a bladder press.

At the time I was kicking myself because I thought we bitcoin was about to pump to $200K. Turns out I timed the top almost perfectly.

Stick to your plan.

The old basket press was brutal. Every bit of pressing force came from me cranking it by hand. Cycling loads meant lifting heavy steel pieces and shoveling the grape cake into wheelbarrows. I needed help to just do it and the days were long and hard.

This bladder press has really upgraded my process. I can control exactly how much pressure I apply, the cake dumps straight into a bin and I can run the whole thing by myself.

I don't ever expect to get that Bitcoin back, but it did buy me a hell of a lot of time and labor savings in the future. by @peonylanewine

At 5,680 feet the sun hits harder.

More UV gets through the thinner atmosphere and grapes respond by growing thicker skins to protect themselves.

Thicker skins means more of everything that makes red wine interesting. More color. More tannin. More of the compounds that give wine depth and texture.
