Only found in a few places naturally in the world, Itacolumite (otherwise known as Indian Shaking Stone) can wobble and twist without breaking!

This is caused by weathering on the rock. Liquids flowing through the matrix, removing grains creating gaps while also depositing silica to the structure, which strengthens the remaining interlocking grains of quartz.

This allows the grains to slide against each other!

This is from a behind the scenes tour of Lapworth Museum of Geology in Birmingham, UK.

I was so scared to break it but I need not have worried as it's not as fragile as it looks. Museum manager Jon Clatworthy was much more confident picking it up and holding it!

SVP 2025 IS OVER!!! What an incredible evening of mental dance moves to conclude the week. This is where the biggest achievements in the field of paleontology are celebrated and it's been a joy seeing old faces / meeting new ones.

I am especially appreciative of my time talking with @skeletoncrewpaleo, Dr. Dave Hone, @paleontologizing, and @lady_naturalist discussing video production and ethical science journalism. I have so much admiration for all of your work and long may it continue.

Normal content on this page will resume next week with clips from my videos with @dragonsofwales and @deinonychusfloof and YouTube will receive a new longform video featuring @camodinoproject

Once again, lovely meeting everyone please don't be strangers and hopefully talk soon :)

NEW VIDEO ON THE @PEOPLEAREFISH YOUTUBE CHANNEL! Meet Invictibellatrix: Europe’s First Megaraptoran Dinosaur. Megaraptorans are a mysterious group of dinosaurs with limited fossil remains, and now a new discovery claims they would have been present in Europe during the Early Cretaceous. This new megaraptoran dinosaur, named Invictibellatrix amberina, has broad implications for theropod evolution and biogeography. #paleontology #dinosaur #newdinosaurs #paleonews #britishdinosaurs

Absolutely fantastic two days of the #marinereptileconference2026 at Oxford Natural History Museum, attending talks and posters on plesiosaurs, pliosaurs, ictyosaurs, marine snakes, turtles, crocodylomorphs and more. Lovely to meet so many old faces and new people who are so welcoming and enthusiastic to share their knowledge. The conference will return again in two years time so please keep an eye out for that! by @peoplearefish
