Your mindset is the foundation!

More than 75 nonprofit leaders addressing housing insecurity joined us this week for our second @avenuesforhope training, focused on mindsets, as we start this “marathon” strong, heading into #GivingTuesday.

One key takeaway: this is soul work. It requires healthy habits and the right mindset.

Much gratitude to everyone who showed up, to our campaign sponsors including @zionsbank Foundation and @idahohousing, and most importantly, to everyone doing the boots-on-the-ground work for Idahoans who need a safe and stable place to live.

Who wants to join our fall Book Club?!

We're reading When We Walk By with our @murrowcollege interns, and they want other housing and homelessness advocates to join our discussions.

This book captures the humanity People First works to restore in how we see, talk about, and show up for our neighbors experiencing homelessness. When Garrett first read it in 2024, it changed how we think about our work, and it still shapes what we do today.

If you work in housing and homelessness (or just care about your community), we 10/10 recommend this book. Whether you've already read it or plan to, we want to nerd out about it with you!

We're meeting on Zoom three times this fall, one conversation for each part of the book. No expertise needed, just curiosity and an open heart.

Comment below if you're interested and we'll message you the deets!

Lastly, we can't share this post without shouting out the authors Kevin F. Adler (@miraclemessages), Donald W. Burnes, Amanda Banh, and Andrijana Bilbija. Thank you for framing homelessness as a humanitarian issue. We're so grateful for your work. 💙

These nonprofit leaders are fired up about @avenuesforhope and completed bootcamp!

We hosted our first of seven trainings this week, and over 70 nonprofit leaders addressing housing insecurity in Idaho tuned in.

One key takeaway: your understanding and confidence about this campaign, and the work of addressing housing insecurity more generally, determines how you show up and talk about it. And that matters!

Together, we moved from overwhelm to confidence, and from confusion to clarity.

Much gratitude to everyone who showed up, and to everyone doing the boots-on-the-ground work for Idahoans who need a safe and stable place to live.

Who else believes we can collectively raise $7 million for Idaho nonprofits addressing housing insecurity this December?

We are 81 days out from #GivingTuesday and the start of @avenuesforhope!

People First is thrilled to partner with the @idahohousing again this year to offer a training series (seven total!), 1:1 nonprofit coaching, and strategic support throughout the campaign.

To the nonprofit leaders and 100+ organizations on the frontlines, thank you. Your work is truly life-changing, and we hope to see you (and your teams!) at our upcoming trainings.

To this year’s Avenues for Hope sponsors — including Presenting Sponsors @zionsbank Foundation and @idahohousing, Platinum Sponsor @idahocentralcu, and Gold Sponsors @bcidahofoundation and Sagent — thank you for investing in building a better housing future for Idaho. The prize and matching gift pool for this campaign are gamechangers!

Together, let’s make this the best Avenues for Hope yet.

Before People First was People First, we were Murrow students.

Now we’re looking for two Murrow Cougs to join our team.

This internship is hands-on work in content creation, community outreach, and campaign strategy — all in support of a nonprofit partner working to ease the burden of homelessness.

This is where communications skills meet social impact.

Christmas in July, because nonprofits ensuring people's basic human needs are met (like housing) deserve support year round.

People First had the honor of launching @corpus_commons monthly giving program, Friends of Corpus. They're Boise's only daytime shelter, providing meals, showers, employment assistance, and most importantly, a place to belong, be seen, and treated with dignity.

Monthly giving is so important for nonprofits doing life-changing work. Why? When generous community members invest in causes they care about through a recurring gift, they are providing sustainable income that the nonprofit can plan around, build on, and count on.

So many organizations, like Corpus, receive a huge influx of donations at the end of the year, which is awesome but can also be stressful in terms of financial planning. When you give once, you're part of a moment. When you give monthly, you're part of the mission. You're a friend the organization can count on.

On the flipside, monthly giving is a way for all of us to be philanthropists. You don't have to wait until you make $X to start giving, that goalpost only moves. You can be the change you wish to see in the world by committing what you can monthly. A subscription for good, if you will.

Gets off soap box.

Friends of Corpus is 58 neighbors strong. Our goal is 100 by the end of the month. Learn more and join us in being a friend Corpus can count on by visiting their website: corpuscommons.org by @peoplefirstcom

My first-ever podcast interview is up!

Y'all…I'm FIRED UP about monthly giving programs and what they make possible for BOTH nonprofits and their community of supporters.

Give it a listen (link in bio) and let me know what you think.

This was both very uncomfortable and very fun. I'm still stepping into my power of being a subject matter expert on monthly giving and housing insecurity. It's been a journey (to say the least). But I know this: I'll always be learning, and I love learning from Nancy Bacon!

Nancy and Sarah, thank you again for the invitation and for making it feel safe to show up. This one meant a lot.

"People First has been instrumental in helping us show up consistently and professionally as a brand-new organization.

They've allowed me to stay focused on policy and coalition work knowing that our external communications are in good hands. For a two-person nonprofit, that's huge."

— @aliforidaho, Executive Director, @gemstatehousing

Idaho is one of the fastest-growing states in the country. While we can’t stop growth, we can choose how to grow.

Gem State is Idaho's first nonpartisan pro-housing coalition, dedicated to expanding home choices for all Idahoans. They educate communities, partner with cities, and build coalitions across the state to ensure more options — plexes, townhouses, starter homes — are available to everyone who calls Idaho home.

We are grateful to have grown alongside Gem State. We've learned a lot from Ali, and we’re proud of what we’ve been able to build in partnership with this new organization.

Together, we are making it easier to build the homes Idahoans actually need.

Check out their website and join a local pro-housing group in your community!

"I met Garrett and started working with him in 2021, and what has remained consistent throughout is how genuinely he and Amethyst honor the stories of people who have experienced homelessness.

From news coverage to recorded videos and everything in between, People First always made me feel like my story matters, not just as content, but as something worth protecting.

Sharing my lived experience with homelessness is vulnerable, and People First never takes that lightly. They are compassionate, professional, and easy to work with.

People First is more than a name, it is how Garrett and Amethyst actually operate."
