The fear of rejection or caring too much what others think is a major barrier to reaching our highest potential in life… not just for artists, but most people in general. It was my pleasure to share my most epic failures with the students at WMU and say “I can’t wait until you fail, survive it .. then say.. oh that wasn’t so bad”. My greatest accomplishments in my life came from my reaction to failure, backlash or rejection.

Even if there’s just one person you can help or one person who is inspired by your boldness, your creativity, your ideas… isn’t that worth the risk? Like my Pops told me that one fateful night… “Today could be your last day on Earth, I hope not, but tomorrow isn’t promised. Seize this moment to say what you need to say”. Govern your ego, go be Great, go Fail!

Thank you Dr Lisa Coons for letting me pop in to your class. Behind the scenes shot from @jbwmu

Day 2 of my Artist In Residence at @westernmichu

As Global Ambassador of @moral_courage - I had the distinct honor of being in conversation with the honorable Dr. Lewis Walker. At 90 years young, he shared openly about his decades long journey as a Civil Rights Activist, Bridge Builder and work in education and justice reform. I had a chance to thank him, on behalf of my generation, for creating more space for us to stand up and speak up. Because of what his generation did during a time where speaking up could and often resulted in death and physical harm, we can be a bit braver and a bit safer while doing the same. Thank you sir.

After our shoot, I was able to chat with the Poetry and Creative Writing honor students in Professor Alen Hamza’s class. We spoke in depth about @peoplenotthings - A Philosophy for the Age of Division. And the raw power of poetry, art, unbridled self expression. They were vulnerable and shared about their fears as creatives, in a culture so quick to dismiss or degrade self expression or even personal opinion for that matter. Overcoming that fear is one of the most powerful things they will learn in their young life, and I’m honored I can play small part in helping them destroy that barrier.

Excited for day 3…

Today I start my week long residency at Western University Michigan! This morning I spoke to Dr. Vincent’s Film students about the production of our documentary “Mississippi Turning” produced by @moral_courage and @breakout Then I spoke to both undergrad and grad students from Prof. @shondabuchanan ‘s Poetry and Creative Writing classes… about the production and publishing of my book People Not Things: Love Poems For Humanity. And THEN visited Prof. @heidi.weiss.art class of visual art students! I spoke about the 4 Barriers of the philosophy of @peoplenotthings and they created new pieces in conversation with the philosophy. Such an incredible experience. I was blown away by the young artists and writers I met today. Thank you for making it happen Jeff and Irshad 💕 and Mallory @yrollamallory ☀️

This is a unique experience for me and I pray my Creator bless me with more like it!

A warrior knows that fear is fleeting
To hesitate is to die…

So I fill this cavity with a quiet hope
I’m too ashamed to utter
Not another ear for miles
I could yell and none would hear
The light kisses the fog
As the sun rises to conquer the night
I’m startled to see just how vast and ominous
This canyon is
A heart that truly opens
Can fit the entire cosmos
Burdened with the pain of the World
Still I hold a childish hope

I’m too afraid to utter

Even to myself

Have you ever taken a significant break from social media? What did that cleanse teach you?

This is what I learned after my six month cleanse.
