I’m the 2025 Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson writer resident! I’ve been in Aminah’s home for a little over a week now. I am working on my book “Black Presidents”, an illustrated history about some of the remarkable people who have served Black Liberation through activism, art, law, science, & politics, thru innovation, collaboration, and fearless dedication.

time is different in Aminah’s house! I feel less tired than usual, and happier. my head is generally clearer, and I’m not scrambling to catch time to work, I’m just working. I’m always staying in other people’s houses, so that part isn’t strange, but this is a very unique experience for me…looking through someone else’s books daily, being surrounded by their art, and using their processes to guide my way. I feel less guilty to explore. in Aminah’s house I feel less pressure to produce, which in turn is making me very prolific. there is so much light here.

while I draw, I’m listening to lectures on best practices for research, and to authors who talk about their journey thru writing topical history. I’ve started another “book”, by collecting all my notes into a guide for myself, full of resources, ideas, and organization tips. tho I came in thinking I had a lot completed, I’ve been able to discover that I had skipped ahead a few steps, and need to go back to the drawing board with many things. this is good though! I have time right now to be more clear, and more focused. I’m not as worried now that I will mess this project up, because I’ll leave with a streamlined process. as a non-academic, I am sometimes throwing myself blindly into pools of information and thrashing about wildly to make sense of everything, but now I’m starting to feel more sure about my direction.

thank you so much to the Columbus Museum of Art for this opportunity! especially thank you to Deidre, for being so kind and fun while guiding me through this time, I’m so grateful! we took a trip to see the Aminah exhibit in Springfield last week and it was beautiful. I’ll be back next month to work in that space, and talk to people about what it’s like to be an artist.

so, a couple years ago Pain Sugar Gallery and I worked on a limited edition art print (a giclee) of Afrofuturist author Octavia Butler…i think we’d like to do another print run, is there any particular images or people that y’all might be interested in hanging on yr wall?

POCtober Art @poctoberart is a digital instagallery that I started in 2018 in the tradition of those one-a-day October illustration challenges, with a unique focus on the discovery and celebration of Black and POC punk bands.

Fellow artist Southside Frank @southsidefrank_0.2 continued the drawing calendar in 2019, and added rock and funk to the mix. In 2020, we started doing the calendar together each year, and then we began releasing collections of the drawings into zines with articles and interviews, called “POCtober Sketchbooks,” of which there are three currently, with another upcoming.

Now it’s 2026, so this has been going on for nearly a decade! I didn’t really participate in the planning this year, and I can’t participate in the drawing either, however Frank is doing it all solo again, give that man his flowers!!! 🌸🌺🌼

Follow along at @poctoberart for the calendar prompts to draw along, or just to learn about new bands. This is going on all October!

ps. We do still have zines for sale, so let me do some inventory this week and open my etsy back up for a second in case anyone is interested. I have the Up the Black Punks shirts too.

me and my birthday twin Stayvee are gonna hang out on the porch/roof and get a lil bit older on October 4 to 5th! if yr a friend, come hang out with us n’ stuff, we’ll be at him n’ Taylor’s house (near Parson’s Uppercup).

If you want to avoid Steyven who is really annoying, come early and leave before he gets off work at eleven 🤣 but if you DON’T want to avoid Steyven, who is really cool, come after eleven and tell him and Taylor congrats on their newlywed status and also say congrats about his 2026 IGNATZ WIN (as a contributing artist in Wimberly’s LAAB #3)!!! What is Trash to Treasure? An initiative to transform normally ugly infrastructure into a unique art piece that sits along Pearl Alley. 4 artists will be transforming a dumpster into a work of art this Saturday & Sunday at University Square at 15th & High. Come out to enjoy the Pearl Alley Jam with live music from local bands, live mural painting and explore the vintage resale market.

Raeghan Buchanan @peppermint_raygun is an illustrator, muralist, and author. Her creative work centers on exploring different areas of Black heritage, such as rock ‘n’ roll musical roots and its effect on sub genres such as punk rock, as well as general, social & political history, and science fiction. You can see her works on various walls and in private collections around Columbus, Ohio, acquired by clients like the Streetlight Guild, Maroon Arts Group, Zora’s House, Columbus Fashion Alliance, the Aminah Robinson House, and Blockfort Gallery.
