Oak Leaf Media spent a day with young director Rares “Pepple” Andronic, accompanying him to Kaboom Festival for the premiere of his debut film, “Not So Public Spaces”. Today he’ll have his Australian premiere at Melbourne International Film Festival. From a student film to an international stage, Not So Public Spaces is already carving its path beyond borders. by @pepple_art

Not So Public Spaces is an exploration of how gentrification changes the spaces people used to love. Places that once belonged to subcultures are slowly reshaped into a manufactured capitalist “paradise”. Rares Pepple Andronic saw how the spaces he used to love back home in Brasov, Romania were slowly changed by privatization and gentrification. Art festivals, punk venues and skateparks were slowly taken away from the people and were put in the hands of private corporations to create commercial venues. The city he used to love lost its charm and was stripped of its culture.

After moving to Rotterdam, the same issues persisted, but in another environment. Clubs like Weelde, Poing and the Museum Park Skatepark were slowly being shot down in favor of inaccessible venues.

All the spaces and the characters presented in the short are inspired by my real location and communities around the Netherlands and Romania. The first space is inspired by Visssual, a closed club in Brasov, the second space is inspired by the old Museum Park Skatepark in Rotterdam, and the third space is inspired by a DIY skatepark in Cluj-Napoca. They slowly became malls, expensive museums, and office spaces.

The short ends with the antagonist transforming the venues into his playground. This is a call to action for everyone to fight for the places they love.

I’m excited to announce my short graduation movie “NOT SO PUBLIC SPACES”. It’s a movie about how corporate greed and corruption changes the spaces subcultures inhabit. There will be a private screening at Kino, Rotterdam on the 10th and 12th of July.

💿MF DOOM is a huge inspiration for my style. Listening to his music while designing and animating makes my stuff have a grungy/edgy vibe, maybe is from his beats. When I saw the visualizer from the MF Doom’s “Mmm.. Food” 20th anniversary, I wanted to work with my rapper friends to do something similar. It’s cool that rap has always been connected to animation/ comic culture and it’s nice to continue that 😎. Having MF Doom’s vinyls on my wall is some cool art to look at and good music to listen to.

Whenever I’m animating something alone, I go straight from the sketch/ animatic to the line-art, I don’t bother with the in-between sketches. It may look choppy in parts and not as polished but working fast is important, especially when you need to rush for a realease.
